About the Author

Ian R. A. MacKay has been teaching general acoustics and the acoustics of speech to future speech-language pathologists and audiologists, as well as to students of Linguistics and Psychology, for several decades. Over this same time period, he has been teaching phonetics and speech production (speech science in its various manifestations). His research interests include the phonological acquisition of a second language (the learning of the sound system of a second language). He has recently become interested in issues in the biological evolution of the human capacity for speech and language. MacKay is the author of two editions of a general phonetics textbook, the first edition entitled Introducing Practical Phonetics, and the second, much revised edition entitled Phonetics: the Science of Speech Production. MacKay has degrees in Linguistics and Speech Science. He lives with his wife Jo-Anne and an aging standard poodle.

Charming little cookbook

This book has back to back recipes and no pictures, which I found refreshing! It contains recipes for things I remember my grandmother had made but had never written down. I found it a jackpot of the really heart warming recipes that I thought I'd never get a chance to reproduce for my family and would heartily recommend it to others who want a no frills, sensible old style German/Austrian cookbook. The old family favourites like Salzburger Nockerln are certain to get you baking, even if the Lung Strudel never gets a fair go.....Enjoy.

Amazing book but not for beginners.

I grew up with Austrian cooking and tried to find the perfect book to recreate the recipes my Oma used to make. This book is fantastic! It has great recipes that I love to make! The only thing you really have to be careful is that it is not a step by step recipe book. You really have to be a confident cook to use it. If you don't mind "a pinch of this and that" without exact directions, you will really enjoy it! If you need things laid out EXACTLY how to do it, then this is not the book for you! I however, have yet to find a better more authentic Austrian cooking book

You can gain weight just reading this book, but your mouth will be happy!

A passionate home cook that has been honing her cooking skills for the last 25 years, concentrating on Italian cooking for the last 10 years, writes this review. My favorite cookbooks are "The Professional Chef" by the Culinary Institute and "Culinary Artistry". With more than 500 cookbooks in my collection I am usually disappointed in my recent cookbook acquisitions. This particular book is on loan from an Austrian friend, whose two brothers are chefs in Austria. Given that a woman born and raised in Austria thinks the recipes in this book are authentic I have to assume that she knows more than the reviewer that disagrees.

The book is outlines as follows:

4. Meat, Game and Poultry

5. Some Cold Dishes

6. Vegetables

7. Salads

8. Savoury Sauces

9. Dumplings and the Like

12. Gateaux and Icings

Before I review the book, I must say that if you are on a diet, this is not the book for you. I think that you could gain weight just reading this book. However, if you are a fan of desserts, WOW what a book!

The first chapter the author explains the difference in some of the typical ingredients of Austria. She also provides a table that translates the European Gas Marks into degrees, which I do not see very often in foreign cookbooks.

The garnishes for the soup alone are worth the cost of the book. I have never seen such variation in noodles and dumplings. And then, there are the schnitzel recipes. Can you say yummy? Where do you even begin talking about how wonder a well-made schnitzel can be? Makes me long for Berghoff's Restaurant in Chicago, an institution that is now gone.

The Austrians apparently have their own version of Risi Bisi, which I was certain was Venetian. But maybe I am incorrect. The difference between the two versions seems to be that the Austrian's do not use Arborio rice.

The Dessert sections are absolutely amazing. The Austrians have taken dessert making to a new level. Each recipe is more mouthwatering than the next. There is a recipe for Strudel dough, and every Austrian dessert that I could think of. If you love desserts, these chapters make the book worth buying alone.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone that loves Austrian food, or just good food. I borrowed this copy from an Austrian friend, but I will be ordering my own copy.

Yet within the synthesis of the trends - social, political, religious, scientific, artistic - that make up China's past and present, the author never loses sight of the telling detail that brings history to life. A History of Chinese Civilization is illustrated by a wide range of photographs, many maps, line drawings and tables. A detailed and updated chronological table and full bibliography complement the text and the expanded index now includes Chinese characters.

An important book for understanding modern China

My main interest in history is to understand the development of civilization from earliest times, and since I had been concentrating mainly on the Middle East and Egypt, I realized I had to know more about the eastern civilizations of India and China. After rereading China's Imperial Past by Charles O Hucker (ISBN 0804708878 which was published in 1975), I searched for later books on the same subject, which would hopefully provide more details about the development of Chinese civilization. I liked the reviews of this book, and so I purchased it.

Professor Gernet certainly provides a very detailed review of Chinese civilization from earliest times to the present day, with a helpful introductory chapter, many useful maps and summary tables, a long Chronological table, many interesting plates and photographs, and an extensive bibliography and index, all of which I found to be essential for obtaining an understanding of what I was reading. This 800 page book is in 11 parts chronologically arranged by dynasty and comprises 32 chapters in all.

I found one of the most enjoyable features of the book to be Professor Gernet's admiration for of the achievements of the people of China over the past 2000 years, and in particular, his description of the continuity and improvements which have occurred to political administration, technological developments, and political and philosophical thought despite the many political upheavals and diverse origins of successive dynasties. What I also found very appealing were his deep sympathies to their enormous sufferings particularly in the last 150 years

This book generally covers the same topics as Professor Hucker's book does for the period up to 1850 and they are usually quite consistent in their descriptions of events. While both books are strong on the subjects of literature, philosophy and art, I found that Professor Gernet was the better on the subjects of social and economic development and that Professor Hucker was much easier to follow on the essential threads of political history, even though Professor Gernet provides rather more detail. However, whereas Professor Hucker ends his book in 1850, Professor Gernet devotes the final chapters of his book (150 pages) to the consequences of the economic and social decline of China from 1800 onwards, which resulted in the massive rebellions of the period 1850-1875, the takeover of China by the nations of the West and Japan, and the establishment of the People's Republic of China

While this was not a reason I purchased this book, I did find it particularly helpful in understanding the reason for the success of Chinese Communist Party in founding the People's Republic of China. The final chapter of the book which summarizes the main events of the period up to 1992, went a very long way in helping me understand the behaviour and logic of the leaders of the PRC, and the book as a whole clearly demonstrated to me that a good knowledge of the past history of a country is essential in understanding its attitude and behaviour in modern times.

Due to the sparseness of available records and publication of archaeological data the coverage of the very early period to the end of the Warring States period was disappointingly brief. But the level of detail certainly picks up from the time of the formation of the first centralized state in 221BC. The most interesting sections for me were those covering the events of the T'ang, the Sung, and the Manchu dynasties and I now have a much better understanding of the involvement of China's rulers with Central and South East Asia, Korea and Japan. I was, however, disappointed in the section on the Y�an (Mongol) dynasty and had to supplement my reading of this period with the book on the Mongol invasion of Europe by James Chambers, and what I could find on the Internet

I have to say that I found this book very difficult to follow at times, not just because of the multitude of unfamiliar places, large number of people, and events, but because the book was organized by subject matter rather than chronological order. I also got the distinct impression that some parts of the book had been rather hurriedly put together from a collection of notes which were not always consistent in the dates or particular order of significant events. On many occasions I became confused as to what was the cause and what was the effect! As a result, I found it necessary to make extensive notes on people, places, events, and philosophical thought in order to fully understand what I was reading. Consequently it took me all of 9 months to complete the reading of the book which was considerably longer than I had planned.

But and notwithstanding my personal disappointments it was certainly it worth the effort. While I found it to be harder to read than Professor Hucker's book I found it to have significantly additional information on China, and the extensive bibliography will be very useful for my continuing studies on the Bronze Age civilizations of China and Central Asia I am glad I persevered to the end, and I do recommend it to other readers.

Has its strengths and weaknesses, but look at the price!

If you compare this book to its obvious competitors (e.g. Valerie Hansen's Open Empire, Schirokauer's Brief History of Chinese Civilization), you have to be amazed at the relatively low list price--especially considering that the publisher, Cambridge University Press, is not famous for selling cheap books. If you can buy only one textbook history of China, this one is worth considering for that reason alone.
Students tend to have the same complaints about Gernet's book year after year (I've used this book many times in an undergraduate survey of Chinese history): it is too long and confusing, without emphasizing what is "important" and what isn't. Other reviewers on this page have similar concerns: the book isn't organized emperor-by-emperor; rather, it tends to focus topically on themes that cover several emperors' reigns, sometimes whole centuries. But weigh that against the major criticism of the book by professional historians, who argue, on the contrary, that the book is arranged only too rigidly according to a periodization imposed from Western history (ancient, medieval, modern, etc.). There isn't enough space here to get involved in these theoretical issues, but it should be clear that Gernet is to be lauded, not derided, for his courage to depart from the old fashioned year-by-year, emperor-by-emperor approach.
This is especially evident in his section on the Six Dynasties (or Northern and Southern Dynasties), which is probably the best succinct account of the period in any Western language. Instead of tediously relating events and dates for this chaotic period, Gernet reveals the underlying socioeconomic forces that dictated the pattern of history in the north and south over the course of this long and complex period. (He happens to be one of the foremost economic historians of China, and is clearly in his element with this kind of historiography.) I believe readers come away with a richer understanding of the Six Dynasties because of Gernet's focus.
Finally, the complaints about Wade-Giles Romanization are unfair and uninformed. When this book first appeared, before the Library of Congress and other major libraries switched to Pinyin, virtually all Chinese books were catalogued according to Wade-Giles, so it made much more sense to write a textbook using that Romanization system than Pinyin. Today, of course, Pinyin would be preferable. But it's not the case that Pinyin is more precise. Both are acceptable Romanization schemes for Mandarin Chinese, and both--assuming one has mastered the principles--indicate the correct sounds efficiently and unambiguously. Criticizing a book about China on the basis of its Romanization system is a bit like judging a book by its cover.

An Excellent Resource, however . . .

This book is an excellent resource for anyone, whether scholar or layman, who needs a quick reference guide to different periods in Chinese history. However, the appendices, which are an improvement from earlier editions, still leave room for improvement. For instance, not all proper names used in the text are listed in the Chinese character glossary. It would also be helpful to provide a Chinese character glossary for proper nouns that, although not of Chinese origin, appear extensively in Chinese texts. For example, it would have been interesting to know the Chinese equivalent of the ethnic group "Sogdian", or the Chinese name of Matteo Ricci. In addition, the bibliography could be further enlarged by including lists of contemporary Chinese and even Japanese works.
The book is not only useful for readers who are unfamiliar with the Chinese language. It is an excellent supplementary resource as well for readers whose first language is Chinese. Most Chinese language historical works suffer from one or more of the following faults: extensive use of classical Chinese materials which, while extremely useful, are often not properly annotated or translated (into vernacular Chinese), leaving readers with inadequate command of the classics at a loss; over-reliance on Chinese language resources at the expense of sources in Manchurian, Mongolian and other languages that have had prominence in different periods of Chinese history; and (especially in the case of the PRC) oftentimes a lack of objectivity, especially in the need to fit China's history into a Marxian straitjacket (so that, e.g., 2,000 years of imperial rule are described as "feudalism"). Gernet's work avoids these pitfalls.

Grade 8 Up–David Levithan's novel (Knopf, 2003) about high school romance is brought to life by more than two dozen actors. Nicholas Robideau provides 15-year-old Paul's narrative voice as the story of friendship, sexual identity, school and family politics, and young love unfolds in mostly–but not completely–lighthearted scenes. The tale is set in a present-day ideal world where gays and cross dressers are accepted and there's no gay bashing, Paul has always known he is gay–and so are many of his friends. His best friend lives a largely closeted life, in fear of his parents' religious intolerance. The school quarterback is a wily transgender youth popularly known as Infinite Darlene. When Paul meets Noah, the attraction is mutual, but Paul's busy and sometimes ambitious social life, coupled with Noah's fear of getting hurt again, temporarily derail the course of true love. Eventually–and after the school bookie has provided all with the opportunity to wager on the outcome–Paul and Noah do get together, and even Joanie, Paul's oldest friend, with whom he's had a miserable falling out, is coming around. Quirky and Beautiful

When I bought this book I didn't read the synopsis, only knew that it was recommended by other people who have purchased the same books as me.

My first attempt to read this book came when I was deciding what my next read would be. Looking at the synopsis, I questioned why I bought this book. Motorcycle-riding cheerleaders, drag queen football players. It didn't sound like a story I'd like. So I passed on it.

Several months later, my second attempt to read the book took. I didn't read the synopsis, I just went straight to chapter one and started reading. That's when I realized this was that motorcycle cheerleader book. I kept on reading... I met Paul, Kyle, Tony, Joni, Zeke, Ted, Chuck, Infinite Darlene and Noah. I didn't know how to place my bet. I was worried about Tony. And when I finished the last page of the book, I wanted more.

Charming Romantic Comedy

In this charming romantic comedy, the typical high school setting is turned upside down with cheerleaders who ride Harleys and a transgendered homecoming queen named Infinite Darlene who used to be just Daryl. When Paul meets Noah, he’s sure that he’s the perfect guy for him, but things go awry and Paul must fight to win back Noah’s affections. With the whole school betting against him, his good friend Tony caught up with his ultra-religious parents, and his best friend Joni consumed by her new relationship, Paul is on his own to find a way to set everything right again.

When I first began reading this book, my immediate reaction was one of disbelief. I mean, where on Earth does this perfect high school exist where everyone understands and nobody is shamed for their sexuality? As I read more, though, I began to wonder why not? Why can’t we live in a time where the homecoming queen is transgendered and the gay-straight alliance is the place to be for both the gay and the straight? As I became involved with these characters I began dreaming of a time and place where the setting of this novel might be reality and the more I thought about it, the more I wondered why not now.

What stood out to me the most in this book, besides the wonderful, accepting world these characters live in, was the beautiful relationships between them. I loved Paul’s friends! It was wonderful to see him coming to the aid of Tony and being a true friend when he really needed it, and even though Joni goes off the rails a bit, I identified with Paul’s struggle to accept the loss of his very best friend. I would have liked to have seen even more of Infinite Darlene, who absolutely stole the show in every scene she was in.

The romance between Paul and Noah is both real and perfect in every way. They fall in love organically in that absolute teenage way where nothing matters but the person you’re infatuated with, and when drama threatens to tear them apart they take a step back to re-evaluate the meaning of absolutes. I absolutely adored the way they traded notes between every class and the gentle way that Paul goes about winning back Noah’s affections. Every grand gesture reminded me of a 1980s John Hughes film and left me grinning from ear-to-ear.

This book is about love and friendship and the lengths we all go to in order to secure those things in our lives. It’s also a book about acceptance that reminded me that although we’re not quite there yet, we’re not all that far from where we need to be.

A great lgbt novel, but it feels like a debut for Levithan (his more recent books are perfection)

The beginning didn't feel like a David Levithan novel. His books always have been so grounded and real to me. This started out kind of ridiculous and outrageous. Many of the characters were larger than life. The city it takes place in also seemed nonrealistic. The high school contains a cheerleader biker gang, a high school cover band, and a few drag queens. All of the high school characters seem very sure of themselves. It felt like adult situations just transplanted into a high school and even earlier with stories that go as far back as elementary school. But I think Levithan did this all purposefully.

About 80% into the book I finally understood why Levithan created a world like this. With the protagonist "having it easy" it creates a unique lens to look at other gay youth in different situations. The chapter entitled "Tony" had me on the verge of tears.

This was David Levithan's first published book and I think you can tell. Many of his signatures are just beginning to emerge. The wit and charm of his writing are there. Unique, quirky, and random still describes his writing, but his writing has grown in his more recent books.

I did enjoy this book and I give it a 4/5. But, if you are looking for a modern gay story you should read "Two Boys Kissing". If you are looking for depth and conversations of sexuality, gender, and individuality you should read "Every Day". I will continue to consume as much of David Levithan's writing as I can.

I learned of Amos Niven Wilder in a discussion of this book, first published by Harper and Row as "The Language of the Gospel: Early Christian Rhetoric" from Bob and Kelly Wilhelm who operate Storyfest. Harvard U. Press has reversed the original title and subtitle, but Wilder's message is unchanged: each person can "tell the story" of (Christian) experience without memorizing verses from scripture. Gates offers a 12-step program for companies wanting to do business in the next millennium. The book's premise: Thanks to technology, the speed of business is accelerating at an ever-increasing rate, and to survive, it must develop an infrastructure--a "digital nervous system"--that allows for the unfettered movement of information inside a company. Gates writes that "The most meaningful way to differentiate your company from your competition ... is to do an outstanding job with information. How you gather, manage, and use information will determine whether you win or lose."

The book is peppered with examples of companies that have already successfully engineered information networks to manage inventory, sales, and customer relationships better. The examples run from Coca-Cola's ability to download sales data from vending machines to Microsoft's own internal practices, such as its reliance on e-mail for company-wide communication and the conversion of most paper processes to digital ones (an assertion that seems somewhat at odds with the now-infamous "by hand on sheets of paper" method of tracking profits that was revealed during Microsoft's antitrust trial).

While Gates breaks no new ground--dozens of authors have been writing about competing on a digital playing field for some time, among them Carl Shapiro and Hal Varian in Information Rules and Patricia Seybold in Customers.com--businesses that want a wakeup call may find this book a ringer. With excerpts in Time magazine, a dedicated Web site, and an all-out media assault, Microsoft is working hard to push Business @ the Speed of Thought into the national dialogue, and for many it will be difficult to see the book as anything but a finely tuned marketing campaign for the forthcoming versions of Windows NT and MS Office. Dated but interesting perspective

Written nearly 15 years ago, Bill gates takes a stab at the evolution of society in the face of the internet. Looking back 15 years, it is amazing that Gates go so many things right. His absolutely amazing foresight provided a "close enough" view of the impacts of the internet to think that the book could be a modern writing. The style is easy and quick to read, and the type is large, the book well structured, and the content varied across business, healthcare, government and society.

The book is probably a 3.5 star read today as it is dated, however I uprated it because it is just amazing to see how close to the pin Bill Gates got. A good and interesting read for certain.

This is a business strategy book, for business leaders. Bill Gates' value-per-hour is too high for idle commentary on tech trends; rather, he focuses on WHY those trends matter from the business leader's perspective, and HOW to get dominance in your industry with information flow as your competitive edge.

Bill Gates' focus in Business @ The Speed of Thought is teaching us how to build a "digital nervous system" -- a real-time and complete information flow. Gates is famous for valuing "information smarts," where the only statements allowed in a discussion are based on actionable facts; going-nowhere drivel has no place in Microsoft meetings, and now, at his Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Here are Bill Gates' steps to building a digital nervous system, which is at the heart of the success of Microsoft and the Foundation:

1) Think hard and write down, What facts are actionable for my company?
2) What are questions to which the answers change my company's actions?
3) Build an information system that answers these questions.
4) If my current business information system does not answer these questions, build one that does.

The book in detail, always with data and examples to back each statement, goes into how to build this information system, and why. Each chapter ends with "Business Lessons" -- a summary of chapter key points -- and "Diagnosing Your Digital Nervous System" -- a set of questions for improving your information system. The "Diagnosing Your Digital Nervous System" questions alone are worth picking up the book.

I found the book dense with facts and examples (relevant at least as much now in 2013, if not more so, than when the book was written in 1998). I recommend you listen to the audiobook of Business @ The Speed of Thought to get through the content, and buy the hard copy, which is useful for referencing certain points, especially the diagnostic sections ending each chapter, and the appendix.

Don't pass up an opportunity to learn from someone who has achieved so much.

This book's intended audience is managers who are interested in how computers and networks can improve business processes. This book is not a Microsoft infomercial. Instead, it poses questions for managers to think about. Here are some examples: (1) "Do you have the information flow that enables managers to get the data they need to make decisions?" (2) "Can employees get access to important data on a daily basis?" (3) "Make a list of the most actionable questions about your business. Does your information system have the data to answer them and the means to distribute it?" (4) "Do your systems let you work seamlessly with professionals such as lawyers and accountants who are 'outside' the corporate walls?" The book also offers helpful platform-agnostic insights. This is an intelligently and clearly written book. I included 25-30 quotations from it in my PowerPoint slide decks for undergraduate business and IT classes.

Has a lot of clinically relevant information, of course useful for the exam, all packed into one concise resource. I loved it, just recollecting all facts in one place, that I heard scattered throughout my fellowship years!
