This might be the best motivational book in the last ten years! You simply CAN'T read this and not be BETTER!
By Craig Daliessio
Okay, I’m up at 5 AM writing a book review.
Why?
Because I love this book!
Terry’s book is a wonder. I don’t say that lightly, I say it because it’s true. I love really good motivational reading. The problem is there isn’t much of it. Oh there’s a lot of motivational speakers and authors, but most of them are carnie hucksters who hope to get rich selling you a book that tells you how to get rich. “Buy my book and you’ll be a millionaire!” If the secret was so simple…they’d be so wealthy they wouldn’t need to sell the book. After filtering it down, I found myself only really listening to three motivators; Zig Zigler, whom I was fortunate enough to have gotten to know and count as a friend. Keith Harrell, who also became a friend and who inspired me greatly in my mortgage career, and Dr. Steven Covey.
The rest are all the same to me. Guys who spit out a lot of words that rhyme with “achieve and believe” and who repel down from the ceiling with loud music playing. Guys who pump you up and then let you down.
That’s why I was so happy that Terry wrote this book. “Better” really is what the title tells us…it’s “self-help for the rest of us.” It’s things you can do right now, not after you’ve made it, or next week, or January 1. It’s achievable goals that stack up until you suddenly look around and say “Dang son! I’m better!”
I started reading as soon as Terry sent me a copy. I thought I’d read a few pages and then get to it that weekend. Thirty minutes later, I’m on page 84, and I couldn’t stop.
It’s that good.
Maybe it’s because I watched this whole transformation. Maybe it’s because I happen to know the author. Yeah it’s some of that. But it’s mostly because there was simply not one page in this volume that didn’t have something useful, practical, and do-able on it.
Terry’s premise is disarmingly simple. So simple that it’s the one thing modern motivators miss… “Just be better.” The greatest motivator of all time knew it. Zig said this all the time… “You have to think before you can do, you have to do before you can have.” Think. Do. Have. Start now. Terry outlines how he lost the weight, changed his outlook, grew his business, became a better dad and husband and friend…and a better man. He did it with little bites. He changed little things. He didn’t get up and decide one day to train for a marathon. He got up one day and decided that his last drink was, in fact, his last drink. He decided that the weight on the scale was as heavy as he would ever be again in this life, and if he never lost a pound, as long as he didn’t gain one more, he’d reached the first goal. He walked to the end of the driveway. Then around the block. Then he ran.
The marathons came later.
Terry is honest in this book. Honest, but always funny. He will inspire you. I swear to you…on every page was something I needed to write down. Something I could do right now, that was going to make me better.
Better.
That’s really what we want, right? I want to be a better employee today than I was yesterday. I want to be a better dad, a better friend, a better man.
Terry shows the way in this book. His story is inspiring because he did it, and because he is just like you and I. If Terry can do this, I know I can.
What Terry’s book offers, is hope.
“Hope is a dangerous thing,” as Red Redding said in Shawshank Redemption. In his case it was dangerous because giving a man hope when he can do nothing with it, is cruelty. But giving a man hope and then turning him loose to see what he can do is power. It seemed like every sentence I read gave me hope. (And I’m a hopeful, positive guy as it is) The one phrase that kept running through my mind was “I can do that!” or “Yeah, I can do this!” I can be better at this aspect and that aspect and this thing over here and that thing I’m not better at just yet.
I was walking down the hall at work the next morning, thinking of things in my job that I was going to do better that day. The next morning. Not the next Monday or January 1 or my next birthday.
Terry hit the bullseye with this book. I’m telling you…and I’m not kidding…if you read this, you will find something in it that will excite you, inspire you, give you a fresh dream, and make you better, too.
The book is “Better: Self Help for the Rest of Us”
Five stars, and three cheers for Terry Lancaster!

A must read easy to follow self-help book!
By Yvi MC
I really, really liked this book. I enjoy reading self-help books because it always helps me to refocus on making myself a better me, and this book did not disappoint. What I love most about this book is how down to earth it is! The author is a guy who has plenty of self-admitted flaws, and he owns them proudly because he knows that he is good even flawed, BUT he can be a better him with minor adjustments. I love that! So many self-help books focus on what is wrong with you and how if you do all of these complicated steps, you can fix yourself. This book pretty much says that you are okay as you are, but there is a slightly better you waiting around the corner if you want to focus on doing just one thing differently.

This book gives realistic, small step advice in real world terms for the average person. He uses humor to lower your resistance to new ideas. He shares his own real life examples of struggles and set backs and successes. He uses analogies/comparisons that make sense. His advice is for the everyday, busy person who can't fit an extra hour of anything into their already crammed day. And I LOVE that he puts the lessons to be learned in BOLD face, separated from the rest of the text. I'm tempted to take pictures of those phrases and use them as my screen saver. :-D

And probably best of all, he has a web site completely dedicated to helping each of us become a better person. To me, this is a must read for everyone. It's quick and easy to understand, and you will come away wanting to focus on just one part of your that you want to make better. And we can all work on something. ;-)

Like many, I’d reached a point where I’d read ...
By Mr. Gary
Like many, I’d reached a point where I’d read enough self-help, and I’d pretty much heard it all. I tried Better! Because I kept hearing good things, and I liked the concept—not GREAT, just BETTER. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, I actually did adjust my attitudes, and I found myself uncharacteristically motivated by Terry Lancaster’s words. And I really like the concept, as he puts it: “You don’t need perfection to live a better life. You can be healthier… happier… more prosperous.” Even if it’s just a bit here, something there, reasonable goals, doable steps, we can all find many ways every day to be better. Terry quotes a song: “Anything can happen. Anything happens all the time.” It doesn’t have to be everything—just anything.

This is an enjoyable read, with slightly bawdy but real language, broken into chewable bites with bold-faced headers and action steps, punctuated with jokes and quotes and anecdotes to the point of entertainment that’s making its point. Terry gets into lifestyle, exercise & health, weight, relationships, career—the usual areas where most of us know we could do a bit better. What makes this work is his empathy. He gets it, and he gets us. He’s not crowing about all the ways he’s succeeded, just being a friend talking about the ways he’s feeling good about being better, gently nudging us toward feeling the same kind of good.

This is a quick, easy, fun read; and I can’t imagine anyone going through it all and saying nothing there offered anything new, that the examples weren’t poignant, that not a whit of motivation came from it. No, instead of leaving us feeling bad about our failings, it’s uplifting, a shot of what-the-hey, surely we can accomplish something. I give this book my highest recommendation. Reading it will leave you-- whether a little or a lot—that much better.
