Beware, it really isn't for dummies at all! Covers a lot of ground / A good primer.

Don't let the "for dummies" part fool you, this book is great even if you've been using SQL for years. I picked this book up because I read reviews saying this is far too advanced for a beginner. I can't speak for beginners, but it was great for me. I'm an intermediate level software engineer, and I have built more than few databases already. However, there are gaps in my knowledge, and I found this book helpful for getting myself more up-to-date with SQL concepts from schema design to performance tuning.
I particularly enjoyed his description of all the standard SQL data types from char, varchar to national char, blob and clob. There are some nuances between various data-types which I was a bit hazy on, but this book cleared that all up. He does a great job explaining things like indexing and how to tune up database queries. He touches on some advanced concepts like EF Codds normal forms, and explains some of the differences, and even tells you which normal forms are too obscure to really be relevant for most database systems. He also explains why de-normalization matters and how to find that "sweet spot" between performance and robustness (resistance to modification anomalies).
If you're not already familiar with RDBMS concepts like relations, attributes, tuples, ER models, and such, this book may be a very valuable read for you. I'm giving this book 5 stars because it gave me exactly what I wanted-- about 640 pages summarizing all the important concepts of SQL, plenty of real life examples, and illustrations as well.

Fair but not great

I am someone who is new to learning SQL, and I will say that if it wasn't for the fact that I am familiar with Access, I would be somewhat lost with this book. In some parts of the chapters Mr. Taylor gives detailed information, however a lot of the instruction is lacking. Often, he tells you to do something, but there is no step-by-step instruction. I am quick learner when it comes to software, programming, etc., but for someone who has no exposure to SQL or databases, I think this book would be frustrating.
What I do like about this book is that he uses Access to teach you the SQL coding. Getting your hands on other programs like MySQL or Oracle can be a bit daunting for someone just starting out. Using Access makes learning a bit easier even if it is not the best DMS out there.

Bad start to learning SQL - really, avoid

By no stretch of the imagination am I an obtuse person. I completed my MBA at Harvard in 2008 and have just been accepted to University of Oxford. I wanted to learn SQL as a time filler and thought, based upon other ...for Dummies' texts I have read before that this would be the best and fastest ramping method. Oh how I was wrong.
This is a very difficult book to read and written by someone who wants the reader to raise to his level rather than come down to theirs. The structure is frankly a complete mess with very few definitions of everything (I was constantly going to google for definitions) and when he did provide definitions they were other very abstract or very vague so once again trips to google.
His explanation of Database Normalization from 1NF-3NF was just an incomprehensibly contradicting mess. I garnered better explanations from the web forums.
I showed some of the text to a friend of mine in NY who is a professor of IT and he said it was one of the most garbled explanations of the subject matter he had come across.
SQL and relational databases is really not that hard a subject matter with the correct material to learn from but avoid this mess of a book if you really want to learn it.
