About the Author

Duane Storti is a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Washington in Seattle. He has thirty-five years of experience in teaching and research in the areas of engineering mathematics, dynamics and vibrations, computer-aided design, 3D printing, and applied GPU computing.

Mete Yurtoglu is currently pursuing an M.S. in applied mathematics and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at the University of Washington in Seattle. His research interests include GPU-based methods for computer vision and machine learning.

How does it compare to NVIDIAs free stuff?

This is an outstanding, relevant and timely text. However, the real question is: for the price, how does it compare to the plethora of FREE materials online from NVIDIA?

First, registration and access to the online supplements from Addison at informit dot com is a MUST. As anyone knows who has mastered a new language, "wash on, wash off" (intense, repeated skill practice) is a must, and the steps to proficiency (especially if you know some C or C++), are really here with the online examples in addition to those in the book.

On relevance, the battle between GPU and CPU supercomputing/ hpc is hardly over, regardless of IBM and Intel "flooring" the processing Ferrari with new GPU competitors. Just look at DOD buying truckloads of gaming platforms lately (including gaming systems, not just Alienware!) to pull and wire the GPUs into workstation HPCs. Buyers have to decide if the GPU phenomenon will last the next 10 years in HPC, but NVIDIA is investing SO much in this community that even hybrid CPU/GPUs like the old math co-processor dance and integration will NOT obviate you getting into this now, even if your career is just starting.

I teach HPC online, but more from the circuit/CPU/GPU side than code, so my students are more C types from that point of view. Even so, if you don't have access to Argonne, Los Alamos or NOAA, this text clearly gives you the skills to work at differential equation level on gaming workstations, which is enough to get your projects to the stage of sharing time on the bigger machines. The text covers all the topics you need, in fine fashion, to understand the GPU angle of HPC, without making it so specific that it won't help your overall HPC skills.

Now, the budget question: since NVIDIA has been so up front, generous and frankly prolific in supporting the GPU HPC community, why can't you just get the CUDA manual and find the rest of this text's topics online? IMHO that is a non-issue, and would be a big mistake. These authors have made painstaking efforts to structure this text in a way that builds from basic setup and SDK to advanced topics, in an order that is far more didactic than just looking up topics manual style. If you're already a guru in this area, this will be less helpful, but my students, many of whom are graduate Engineers, LOVE the approach of this text. Issues that seem easy to 20,000 CPUs like thread independence vs. competition vs. cooperation become important with GPUs and GPU/CPU combinations, for example. You can look this up with NVIDIA's web help, but the material here gives you the resources to save hours by taking the discussion from basic to advanced in a stepwise fashion that a manual + web search won't do.

Highly recommended. If this were a Springer or dedicated programming publisher's text, it would be $150 US! My recommendation, at the price, is to go for it, even if you're like me and my students: on a serious budget. NVIDIA's "GPU" argument for PetaFLOPS/watt instead of PetaFLOPS may seem spurious or self serving to the casual observer, but if you don't have access to a fusion reactor or gallons of freon, you know that it is a real issue! Besides, a cruncher on your desktop is way cool in other ways, pun intended, and maybe you'll solve Riemann, or figure out lossless, controllable magnetic containment under 150 million degrees with it, I'm betting on you!

the perfect level of explination 4.5 stars

This is an excellent book! a lot of the cuda material out there seems a bit of a disconnect in terms of integration with an engineering development environment. Also I personally find when cuda material in particular makes so few assumptions about the readers level of maturity, easy concepts can become very confusing. I find book really nails the right level of explanation for the right level of the reader. Very happy about this book.

I am taking of half a star because I find having different windows and linux versions of of various things covered gets a bit confusing and i think especially wacky ont he kindle.

Excellent introduction to High-Performance Parallel Computing

This is with no doubt a great book for anyone who intends to learn and use CUDA.
The authors introduce the essentials of CUDA C programming clearly and concisely.
Generally, I was interested in 3D visualisation with OpenGL and CUDA and was glad that I've found in this book what I was looking for.
It helped me a lot. The codes in the book are written with clarity. Also the use of tools for profiling and performance optimization are discussed.

This is an excellent introduction to High-Performance Parallel Computing.

Fantastic

This book was fantastic!! It had everything in a book that I love. Suspense, drama, and hot romance.
York really kept this book moving and had you wanting for more. Camille has grown up privileged but doesn't always want to abide by the rules with security that is until she is kidnapped. Taken to an isolated island she finds her captor Zanov who intends to make her his bride. Not wanting to part take in this she hopes and prays that Nick will come to her rescue. With out giving to much a way i recommend for you to read this book and find out if Camille will become a new bride or be rescued by her one true love.

Camille Norland is used to living the good life and everything she wants is at her feet since her father is a billionaire. Security has always been tight, so when she and her younger sister sneaks off to go shopping at the mall for her father’s upcoming birthday things do not go their way.

They find themselves kidnap but her younger sister is let go. Her kidnapper is a Russian mobster who is into matrimony and he wants her as his bride despite their twenty plus years difference. Victor Zanov had offered marriage before but she had refused not being even attracted to him.

She finds herself on an isolated island off Cuba that Victor has purchased and have been renovating for her enjoyment. Knowing she has nowhere to go and to protect her younger sister, she agrees to marry him despite her fear of him as she hopes to be rescued.

Nick Cassidy is a Security agent that was supposed to watch over and blames himself for the situation. Can he rescue her before Viktor lays his hands on her or will he be too late? Driven by his feeling for Camille that he never dare mentioned to her, can he rescue and tell her his feelings before it is too late?

Will they be able to get off this small and highly guarded island in one piece?

Another great read by Rebecca York!

I just love Romantic Suspense and Paranormal Romance, and I love how Rebecca York blends both elements in to her books. Destination Wedding was a quick read that had a great mix of forbidden attraction, mystery, suspense, and a touch of paranormal thrown in to keep things interesting.

Nick and Camille were great together – Nick fighting the attraction he felt, Camille doing everything she could to get Nick’s attention. Camille was an awesome heroine. She was always surprising me with her ability to do whatever she needed to in order to stay alive and also keep Victor at arm’s length for as long as she could. I loved the fact that in spite of her being an heiress, she didn't play the damsel in distress and was constantly looking for ways to help herself and not wait for someone to come rescue her.

I also loved that fact that in spite of this being a novella, Ms. York does a fabulous job with the back story and characters, giving enough information for the story to make sense and not leaving me wanting more.

Another great read by Rebecca York!

But indeed the heart and soul of Neil Gaiman's magnum opus lies here in Brief Lives. It could be because one of the most central mysteries--that of the Sandman's missing brother--is revealed here (in fact, the plot of this volume is the search for this member of the Endless). It could be because everything that comes after this volume, however surprising or unexpected, is inevitable. But it's more because this is a story about mortality and loss, the difficulty of change, the purpose of remembering, the purpose of forgetting, and the importance of humanity. Gaiman's very popular Sandman series (this is the eighth book in the series) continues with another tale of the Endless, the family of mythic cosmic beings that govern the psychic and physical realms of Dream, Desire, Despair, Destiny, Delirium, Destruction and Death. Morpheus, Lord of Dreams and the central figure in the series, is asked by his sister, the unstable and touchingly demented Delirium, to help locate their brother Destruction. Destruction abandoned his duties 300 years ago (about the time of the Enlightenmentnt), dropping out of sight after a prescient and despairing glimpse of the rise of human reason and its own destructive proclivities. The grimly ironic Morpheus and his whimsically erratic sister travel among the mortals of earth in search of their brother and ultimately learn something of Destruction's reasons for abdicating. Gaiman's works often follow the plots of classical and mythical narratives and Brief Lives, like his other works, can often look and sound as ponderous as a bad period costume movie. But his works are also driven by sharply drawn characters and his knack for capturing the patterns of intimacy, even in an otherworldly setting, can be affecting. Thompson and Locke contribute subtle and vividly colored drawings, rendered in an awkward but agile line.

A family dramedy, featuring one of the most intriguing families in comics.

Brief Lives is yet another great installment in a series already filled with great installments. I would say that BL is both the funniest and the most philosophical that the Sandman has ever been.

The humor is due in large part to the glorious return of dreams youngest sister, Delirium. She...you just can't describe it really, which is appropriate for her character. I guess I would have to say her ADD type personality leads to some laugh out loud moments. Especially when she gets together with Matthew.

The rest of the humor and the philosophy comes from Dream's long lost brother, the prodigal. For those who haven't read, I won't give away his real name. This man is the most reflective of the endless, and the reasons for abandoning his realm are finally revealed. Long time Gaiman fans may also notice the seeds being planted for his novel American Gods, released in the early 2000's.

This isn't my favorite story in the series, but it is for a lot of others that I know. Get reading!

Very good, and central to the story arc, but not my personal favorite volume

First up, all of the 10 volumes of The Sandman novels deserve 5 stars. They are a phenomenal acheivement in not only graphic novels but in storytelling itself. The story is complex and cerebral and the characters so well developed that Sandman is one of my favorite stories period. The novels are intensely violent and often disturbing but everything that happens serves a purpose, and nothing happens by chance or just for the sake of things happening. Something that happens in one volume may become vitally important 3 or 4 volumes later. By the end of the 10th volume everything has come full circle with an appropriate and satisfying end.

With regards to Volume 7, it is good, and central to the story arc, but not my favorite volume. This is primarily because I had a hard time personally relating to the character of Delirium. She was written to be that way but she is an often confusing and difficult character to follow. The story concerns Delirium's wish to reunite with her brother Destruction (one of the Endless who abandoned his responsibilities many years previously). When Desire and Despair both turn her away she goes to Dream who agrees to accompany her.

As far as the volume's content on the Kindle Fire - I was hesitant to abandon the volumes in print worried that the Kindle Fire might provide a more difficult viewing experience. That hasn't turned out the be the case. The novel is easy to read, you can scan in to specific boxes, and the colors are vibrant.

As a comic book fan I know most people probably imagine the world of comics as being about super heroes or Sunday Funnies. But, the comic medium is worthy of so much more.

Sandman is that "much more". The story is excellent, and is wonderfully executed. You're going to want to get all of these at once, because they can't be put down.

If you're already a comic book fan, you've likely heard of Sandman. So what are you waiting for? Read this already!

If you aren't already a comic book fan, maybe it's time to give it a chance. If any story is going to change your mind about the possibilities of this art form, this is the one.
