Dense with information

This book is a fantastic read! It's dense with well-researched and evidence-based information, with plenty of inspiring Eastern philosophy thrown in for good measure. The book is extremely well organised - I particularly appreciated the mind maps for each section.

My impression was that the book was written initially as a companion to the Jolt Challenge Self Intelligence Experience. This self-intelligence journey is presented in a Week 1, Day 1 through to Week 9, Day 5 layout. If, like me, the experiential learning program is not yet available in your city, I would recommend reading the book one day at a time. I found this was the best way to simulate the experience and get the most out of the book.

The book has a mighty aim and I felt that, when given the effort and attention required, it delivers. This 5-star review has one condition, and that is for any potential reader to consider the Jolt Philosophy of "the learning is in the doing." The value of the book for me was not in reading it, but in taking action based on the information that it contains.

A Different Kind of "Self-Help" Book

I tend to be suspicious of self-help books in general, but I'm glad to say that Jolt Challenge is quite different. Fist, it doesn't take itself so seriously. The authors even include a George Carlin quote, "If you're looking for self-help, why would you read a book written by someone else? That's not self-help, that's help."

The book presents a comprehensive approach to "self-help" that ranges from how the "emotional" brain works, why physical needs (water, nutrition, sleep) matter, the importance of clear intention, role models, and the list goes on.

I love how user-friendly this book is. Lots of solid content punctuated by great quotes (like the Carlin one above), cartoons and other graphics, sidebar things to think about.

even with the best intentions, they will soon find themselves in a ...

As a doctor, what spoke to me the most was that our medical students are completely unaware that they are being brought into a system that is so firmly controlled by the pharmaceutical and insurance industries that, even with the best intentions, they will soon find themselves in a cycle of rushed patient visits that invariably end in pulling out a prescription pad... Add to that (in many states) a thick layer of malpractice fear, and it becomes hard to see a way to break the cycle. We are taught that this is "evidence-based" medicine, but it is really pharmaceutical-and-fear-based medicine. As Dr Schwartz says, find a doctor who looks you in the eye and asks about your family-- who shows interest in you as a person, not as a collection of symptoms. Also: the best way to not wind up on multiple medications is to find a doctor whose goal is to get you OFF the ones you are already on. Kudos to Dr Schwartz for speaking truth to power!

Finally empowered!

This book changed how I view my relationship with doctors. I now feel empowered as opposed to scared of upcoming visits. The stories she tells are all so relatable and I could envision any of them happening to me or my loved ones. Dr. Schwartz is truly the first real patient advocate that only has the patient in mind. A must read for anyone that leaves their doctor more confused and scared then they came.

Medical Factory in No. Calif.

I finished the book last night. It came at a perfect time as I will be looking for a new primary doctor in January. After being in Kaiser Permanente here in No. Calif. I finally have come in contact with a medical factory. The experience was just as Dr. Schwartz describes in her book. A factory where doctors have 15 minutes at most to pretend to talk to you, but wanting to only write a prescription to send you out the door.

I will definitely use all her suggestions for looking for a caring and a doctor who will take the time to listen to what I am saying. I know from experience that in our current healthcare system one does not get good healthcare by accident, one has to fight for it. Hopefully this will change and Dr. Schwartz's will help lead the way........thank you Dr. Ericka Schwartz.

Only Thing Missing Is The Quotes....4.5 stars!!!

This book was worth waiting on. The Ciaphas Cain novels are the only books in the Black Library that have any real humor built into them. It was a pleasent suprise to read a Cain novel that had nothing to do with the 597th, because by the time he is attatched to the 597th, he is already a living legend. This book is the story about the campaign that cemented Cain's status as a hero of the Imperium, so those of us who have read the other three novels will not be all that suprised by the ending, but Death or Glory is a great book to read. As always, i really enjoyed seeing how Cain's atempts to look out for #1 end up making him a legend. Another big plus is the length of the novel; i thought that the 2 books before Death or Glory were just too short. I also liked the twist of Cain being forced to cooperate with the PDF forces for him to survive, since he seems to hate every PDF member he has ever come across. Like the first reviewer stated, I do really enjoy the quotes at the beginning of each chapter, so it was a little bit of a letdown that they were not included in this book. I would give this novel a 5 star rating, but because there are no quotes, and there was no way for the ending to hold any suprises, I am going to give Death or Glory 4.5 stars.

As usual - can't wait for more

Sandy's writing is probably of the same caliber as most popular sci-fi writer's today, but let's face it, if you're reading this kind of material it's not because you want to delve into the inner working of the human mind or plumb the depths of life's inherent bias, it's because you want to be entertained.

All of the Caiphas Cain novels to date have done that and this one is no different.

Other reviews have done a fair job of describing the style and even plot of the book, so I'll focus on how it extends the series. If you've been paying careful attention while reading the previous 3 novels, you'll have realized that Sandy has been building up to some tremendous event far off in Cain's future. The back story in this novel really serves to tease and tantalize (sp?) us as to that event (already revealed to be related to the 13th Black Crusade). Whether we'll actually ever get to experience that event is clearly in doubt (since the premise of the series is that it is based on some memoires written several years before that ultimate adventure), but the tidbits Sandy drops in this installment only make you want the next novel all the more.

A Fun Romp & Flashman Homage

This fourth book in the Ciaphas Cain series by M. Mitchell follows the infamous Imperial Commissar and his aid Jurgen, turning back the clock to an adventure early in his career, so technically it's a prequel to the others. It's set in Games Workshop's dark gothic Warhammer 40K universe.

As I have mentioned in reviews of the previous works in the series, M. Mitchell's protagonist pays homage to George MacDonald Fraser's Flashman. The writing style is playful, humorous, and peppered with the editorial comments by Cain's Inquisitorial associate, Amberley Vail of the Ordo Xenos.

At its heart, it is the story of a journey. In their flight from an unplanned crash-landing, Cain and Jurgen collect a supporting cast of capable misfits: Sergeant Tayber, Lieutenant Piers, and one of the more interesting, Fleicia the dedrite-tailed and somewhat irreverent Mechanicus Adept. They go on through a comedy of errors and competence to fulfill the story of "Cain the Liberator," the escapade that first brought him to the attention of important Imperial authorities.

The characters are well written, and have a depth roughly equal to their total screen time. The setting feels realistic and true to the atmosphere of the 40K universe. M. Mitchell writes excellent action scenes, specializing in close, hand-to-hand combat and the not inconsiderable chainsword skills of Commissaar Cain. However, as much as he attempts to make Cain the self-serving coward, the Commissar tends to do the right thing regardless. His style of leadership and his dealings with others may stem from a desire to further his "undeserved and inflated" reputation - or fear - but regardless of the motivation, it still tends to be spot on. As bravery can be defined as doing the right thing in the face of fear, the charge of cowardice seems a bit far-fetched at times.

In short: this is a fun, light-spirited read that will resonate especially well with 40K fans. I was entertained throughout, and M. Mitchell's writing skills continue to improve. However, if you like this, I highly recommend reading its "progenitor," the Flashman series.

This is the dramatic story of the unsung heroes of the Eastern Front of World War 2, the assault gun soldiers of the Sturmartillerie. Sturmgesch�tz-Abteilung 276 was one of many assault guns battalions formed to fight the onslaught of the numerically vastly superior Soviet Forces. They provided armored protection to the largely foot-bound infantry of the German Army. Sturmgesch�tz-Abteilung 276 was formed in the summer of 1943 and fought exclusively in the East until it was virtually wiped out in 1945 in northern Prussia. This history is written entirely in the form of first-hand accounts by members of the former battalion. As such, the reader is drawn into the world of the assault gunner, where cunning and tactical expertise were needed to slug it out with superior numbers of Soviet tanks. Always giving better than it got, the men of the assault artillery accounted for a large number of tank kills on the Eastern Front — far more than their numbers would indicate. Sturmgesch�tz-Abteilung 276, later redesignated Sturmgesch�tz-Brigade 276 in early 1944, was one of the better Sturmgesch�tz units, and produced a number of Knight’s Cross recipients. This is the story of the fighting men of Sturmgesch�tz-Brigade 276, from the formation of the unit, through the bitter defensive fighting in the East and, ultimately, the story of their betrayal at the hands of the Swedes when they were interned at the end of the war. In addition to the exciting first-hand accounts of fighting on the Eastern Front, there are more than 140 photographs of the unit which are being published here in the English version of the book for the first time.

Another GREAT German combat history.

If you're familiar with the Tiger I unit combat histories, this one is much the same. Very easily read first-person combat reports and stories, excellent photos, a highly recommended book that will be a valued part of your collection. My only complaint is that it wasn't done in the same large format as the Tiger I unit histories.

outstanding first-hand accounts - powerful!

This was written by the few men who survived to the surrender, and then ten years in a Russian gulag. Neither bitter nor pathetic, it gives honest, balanced, first-hand accounts and stories, anecdotes and opinions, as well as a bit of background on the operations. Neither a stand-alone history, nor meant as such, familiarity with the operations might help but if you are mostly interested in the story of the men, their machines and their combat experience, this is an excellent book. It's a lot like attending a reunion, or reading the transcript of a bunch of interviews, perhaps. The translation is fine, no complaints there, either.

If you've any interest in the StuG story, or just want an engaging read about men who manned them and weren't famous heroes but everyday heroes, this is the perfect read.

Great History on this unit

Great book on this unit history from the begining to the end when the unit is fighting for it life aganist the russian military on the eastern front. Easy to follow along and many pictures. The actual events are described by the soldiers who were there from a german perspective. One of the last chapter goes into the ordeal of the soldiers who are trying to escape german captivity.

At the other end of the scale, the exquisite 1927 Norwegian-built cruise yacht Stella Polaris represents the prototype of a smaller vessel offering the ultimate in luxury. In the post-war years both ends of the industry have expanded dramatically, and the myriad of ships which have been built, and are being built, are described in detail.

Philip Dawson developed an interest in merchant and passenger ships in early childhood. He started writing on shipping and ship design in the early 1980s. About the Author
Philip Dawson developed his interest in merchant and passenger ships and shipping in early childhood and has continued to follow the rise of commercial shipping, taking particular interest in its design and operation. He started writing on shipping and hip design in the early 1980s, and has since embarked on a second career as a freelance writer, specializing in maritime and transport subjects as well as architectural and industrial design. He is author of British Superliners of the Sixties: A Design Appreciation of Oriana, Canberra and QE2 and the highly successful tribute to the P&O cruise liner Canberra: In the Wake of a Legend. A regular contributing editor for a number of specialist and professional publications in the transport and design fields, Dawson is also research co-ordinator for the Canadian Design Exchange in Toronto.

VERY SPECIFIC INFORMATION

Mr. Dawson's book is extremely interesting if one is interested in the development of passenger ships. The evolution of their design from liners to cruise ships is covered in much detail. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to understand or 'see' the details described without having the deckplans of each and every ship mentioned. Mr. Dawson's excellent drawings are shown in such a small scale that even the text on them cannot be read. This way a lot of useful information is lost.
Nevertheless, it is an excellent book for those interested in ship design but it is not a picture book for the ship-lover.

Excellent description of Cruise ship design

A very well researched and interestingly written description of how cruise ships have evolved. While another reviewer is correct that some of the illustrations have one reaching for a magnifying glass, there isn't really a way round showing illustrations like this in a standard format book - and it is better to have them than not. Highly recommended.

Best Book Ever

I read and went over this book a bit when I found it hidden in Freedom of the Seas's library. For all the people interested in the design of ships like myself this book is a must read, it is very detailed and Mr. Dawson put's the information in a very clear way. The book has many illustrations which shows you much of what he wrote about. Unfortunately, the book has become too expensive for me to purchase but when prices drop I'll get my hands on a copy.
