Positive Surprise

Wow! - When I got the book I was first of all very positively surprised by the weight of the book...it's not the 192 pages as advertised but rather an impressive 320 pages(!) purely devoted to the French Tarrasch Variation for White (1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nd2...)
Additionally, this EverymanChess-book sports white and clean quality paper, not the poor newspaper-type recycling paper Everyman used for some other books recently.

The book is then divided into 5 Parts
Part1 - General Ideas
Part2 - 3rd Move Alternatives after 3.Nd2
Part3 - 3.Nd2 c5
Part4 - 3.Nd2 Nf6
Part5 - 3.Nd2 de4: 4.Ne4:

I particularly like Part 1 which is divided into:
1 - Tips how to work on your openings in general
2 - French Tarrasch Middlegame Strategy
3 - French Tarrasch Typical Endgames

The bibliography sports all relevant books written about the French/Tarrasch Opening over the last 15 years, among others Watsons' "Dangerous Weapons" book from 2007 and the rare "Winning with the French" by Uhlmann.

I have to admit that I haven't worked through the entire book yet, but from what I can judge by a first glance (I'm 2000 USCF rated) is that the author, an International Master, obviously provides you with a first-class repertoire for White covering all possible Black responses.
He also discusses the topical middlegame positions ('tabiyas') that arise from the opening, and this approach is exactly what the best players do when studying openings.
320 pages on the Tarrasch variation alone indicate that the author provides you with all relevant information you will need for playing this opening for White.
By the way, this variation is very popular among the world's best players and today Morozevich playing a French with Black got blasted away in 31 moves by the Ukrainian player Efimenko Zahar at the Dresden Olympiad with the Tarrasch variation. So you can bet that this opening is Spot On!.
In my opinion this will become the new French 'Bible' for White.
Recommended for all tournament players who are looking for building up a serious repertoire.

Excellent, but a tough slog for this average player.

As a French Tarrasch player with the white pieces, I was incredibly excited when I heard that this book was coming out. After it arrived, I couldn't believe it - 320 pages dedicated solely to the FT! All in typical high quality Everyman format. I've worked (and I mean WORKED) my way through most of it, and feel somewhat inclined to write a review (so here I am).

Before I continue, I must confess something: I'm fairly confident that this is a chess book that is above my ratings pay grade. Plain and simple. I'm not developed enough as a chess player to glean all the good stuff from these pages...and even though I am confident that this is an excellent book, I found much of the going laborious and frustrating. Maybe it's because the book was simply written for someone much, much better than me?

I saw where Donaldson recommended this book for players rated 2000 and above. I suppose that seems right. Make no mistake about it, this is a TOUGH, TOUGH book for an "average" player like me (I'm USCF 1550) to get through. I usually do just fine with most chess books (even the purportedly difficult/expert only ones). Not the case with this one.

So please keep that in mind as you read my comments below.

The "General Themes" section at the front of the book is great, and gives an overview of the basic ideas and themes you can expect/need to know in the typical opening, middlegame and endgame of this opening. I would guess that we will continue seeing more and more opening books written with this type of "general" opening knowledge about specific openings in the future (in fact, it seems we already are starting to see that change).

My biggest "issue" with the book, if you could call it that, is that it's just too damn dense in many areas...but then it will turn around and fail to address a move that is both natural (and thus likely to be seen by me and those of my ilk in our patzer games) and is backed up by big silicone Rybka god. In many areas there is incredible (overwhelming?) depth...in others, an odd absence of depth (or even inclusion at all).

I would argue that the book could have easily been 100 pages shorter, but for the author insisting on taking each and every possible sideline he mentions 25-30 moves deep. I'm not kidding. There are actually games in the book that are awarded a '?' or '?!' on, say move 9, but then another 20+ moves are included beyond where this dubious move or blunder occurred. This is THAT kind of openings book. In this area, I think the author could take some real inspiration from an openings writer like Andrew Greet or James Vigus, who both seem excellent at conveying both the "general" opening ideas and the nitty gritty details to us mere mortals, without burying us in line after line after line of moves and analysis.

To the author's credit, he's clearly done his homework and he put himself heart and soul into this book (which can't be said for many of the authors putting out opening books), and again, if I were rated 2100 I may have a very different review (something more akin to Sinbad's review below). I would guess that this will probably be the French Tarrasch user's bible for a number of years to come...I just wish it was a little more "user friendly". You would think that something less than 320 pages would have sufficed to get the point across.

Excellent coverage of the White side of the Tarrasch French. If you play the black side of this opening, keep in mind that this is a repertoire book for White and not all White choices are covered, only the ones that the author considers to be the strongest.

He serves on several other boards including People for the American Way, Grist, and the Catalog Choice Foundation. Daniel is also a frequent speaker at colleges and universities around the country. He lives in New York City with his wife and two children.

An Important Eclectic Collection

Buy this book for your family, it is truly remarkable. Using everything from famous speeches to modern day slam poetry, "Why Freedom Matters" explains how important the concept of freedom is. The book is broken into five major sections with the various writings set into the theme of each section. The writings reflect different parts of american history from both an American perspective as well as a foreign perspective. D.H. Lawrence wrote a poem about censors that both makes you laugh and shiver at the same time. One of my personal favorites in this book is the letter from Kurt Vonnegut to a chairman of a school board for burning his book. It is his reaction that still gives me hope for our future as a country. This book also contains many women from the annuals of history who are mostly forgotten. This book accomplishes what many school texts do not, giving an appreciation for history without booring the subject to death. There is something here for everybody. This is one that should be added to the personal libraries of every household.

A wonderful treasury

"Why Freedom Matters" is a magnificent digest of American political and social thought based upon the arguments presented in the Declaration of Independence. It presents a series of documents that share in common certain themes taken by the editor from Thomas Jefferson's words. Included are incisive introductions to the selections (the dichotomy between Robert Frost's 'The Gift Outright' and the speech of Chief Seattle is fascinating) as well as the complete texts of the Declaration and the Constitution of the United States.

An excellent resource for all American citizens, "Why Freedom Matters" contains our most important national documents--and the words and thoughts of the generations who have sought to fulfill the promises contained therein.

What a collection!

A motley collection of articles more or less remotely connected to patriotism and the American way of life. I some time trying to figure out why some items were included while others were obvious. I think it's not a bad "coffee table" or "bathroom" book where you might want to peruse some of the articles without reading the book from first to last page.

Fascinating story -- flawed storytelling

I've always greatly enjoyed the Altered States movie. (Well, except for its preposterous ending, which I won't reveal here.)

Recently, I read Paddy Chayefsky's original novel -- which has been out-of-print for some time -- and thought I'd share my thoughts.

The following criticisms might seem harsh, so I should note that I actually did enjoy reading the novel. (Well, except, of course, for its equally preposterous ending...)

Anyway, Altered States was Chayefsky's first and last novel. He wrote it back in the late 70s after enjoying great success and acclaim as both a playwright and screenwriter. [The man won three Academy Awards!]

Unfortunately, the novel suffers from many of the same problems shared by first-time novelists. [I should know. I finished my first novel recently and made many of these same mistakes.]

(1) Dialog.

The characters are always making "speeches" -- instead of simply saying what's on their mind.

Chayefsky was originally a playwright. Unfortunately, his dialog -- both in the novel and in his subsequent screenplay -- reads like theatrical dialog. It's needlessly long-winded.

Theater is primarily a verbal medium and so audiences accept that characters on stage will indulge in lengthy oration. The dialog of novels, however, can and should be far more efficient. Screenplays, too.

Also, there are whole paragraphs worth of dialog where -- and I'm not exaggerating -- *every* single line of dialog ends in an exclamation point! Sheesh.

(2) Omniscient Narration.

Much of the story is written from the point-of-view (POV) of an omniscient narrator, rather than from the POV of individual characters.

It's usually far better to write thrillers in a character-based POV, since that allows the reader to live vicariously through the characters, making the story far more compelling.

Also, although most scenes are properly narrated as if the events are happening "now," others are oddly written as if the narrator is recalling the events of the story from some vantage point months or years later. This is confusing.

(3) Exposition.

The story is buried under a mountain of narrative exposition. At times, stretches of pure exposition -- again provided by the omniscient narrator -- run on for pages.

Stories are, of course, far more compelling when exposition is avoided, and information is instead conveyed through the dialog, thoughts and actions of the characters.

All too often, events that could easily have been presented as "live" scenes were needlessly described via omniscient narration. Moreover, thoughts that could easily have been spoken by the characters were also needlessly set forth via omniscient narration.

The result is that much of the book is simply tedious.

[To his credit, when Chayefsky wrote his screenplay for Altered States, he did an excellent job of converting much of the narrative exposition into actual scenes. One wonders why he didn't bother to do that within the novel itself.]

(4) Too Much Scientific Detail

Chayefsky spent two years researching the science behind the novel. Unfortunately, he jammed every last bit of research into the novel (again mostly via dull exposition.)

So, at times, the novel reads like an encyclopedia entry, rather than a thrilling story.

(5) Run-on Paragraphs.

Apparently, Chayefsky had trouble finding the carriage return on his typewriter. Individual paragraphs often run well over a page long.

[And that's in the hardbound edition. Within his original typed manuscript, individual paragraphs must have run on for three or four pages. I pity the editor who had to read that!]

Anywho, despite these flaws, the underlying story is still fascinating.

It's a shame, though, that the editor didn't convince Chayefsky to rework the novel to fix these flaws. [I suspect that, given Chayefsky's great clout at the time, no one dared tell him the novel was a mess.]

Had the novel been better written, it might still be in print after all these years.

By the way, Paddy Chayefsky died in 1981 after a long and remarkable career. Rest in peace. You gave us some great stories.

P.S. There's an interesting anecdote about the Altered States script/movie. Chayefsky had an unprecedented clause in his contract requiring that the movie be shot exactly according to his script -- scene-by-scene, line-by-line.

Ken Russell, the director, did just that. Still, Chayefsky demanded that his name be taken off the movie. The screenplay is instead credited to "Sidney Aaron."

The reason? Chayefsky apparently wanted all the long speeches of the script to be spoken very deliberately by the actors, so the audience could mull them over. He hated the fact that Russell had the actors race through the dialog.

I think, though, that Russell was right. Otherwise, the movie would simply have been too long and tedious. Russell's direction injected much-needed energy into what was a very "talky" script.

No, the main flaw in the movie was *not* the performance of the actors, *nor* the decisions of the director; the problem was that awful ending.

Did I mention I didn't like the ending?

Disappointing

I was watching a movie on cable which was written / directed / starring Jeff Garlin called *Somebody to Eat Cheese With* wherein Jeff talks a lot about Paddy Chayefsky stating he was one our greatest writers, etc., and I began thinking about Paddy Chayefsky. I was familiar with his screenplays and have seen the movies made from his screenplays (including *Altered States* which I saw back when it was released); but when I looked him up on wiki and saw that he had written a single novel (this one) I made a beeline for the library.

Well - it really wasn't very good. I hate to say this but it was well conceived but poorly written. The characters don't speak in dialogue they spout manifestos. And, as one of the Amazon reviewers points out, they often speak in page long paragraphs where every sentence ends with an exclamation point.

I normally like the book a movie is based on better than the film but in this case it is the other way around: skip the book and rent the DVD.

(BTW, the aforementioned Jeff Garlin movie was pretty good, in a kooky, low budget sort of way.)

About the Author

Justin D. Edwards is Research Professor of English at University of Surrey. He has taught at the universities of Copenhagen, Quebec and Montreal, and he has held research fellowships at Churchill College, Cambridge (2005-6) and Cambridge University’s Centre for Research in Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (CRASSH) in 2010.

Rune Graulund is a Lecturer in English at University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. He has taught literature and cultural studies at the University of Copenhagen and the University of London.

A clear, concise overview of the grotesque movement.

There are precious few books still in print on grotesque theory, and even fewer that are easily accessible. This book, which I purchased for Kindle, is easily the best one I have found. Like any solid introductory text, it introduces the various ideas behind grotesque in art and literature, demonstrates the history and evolution of the concept, and ties it in with both classical and modern examples (the section of body horror being the standout- I learned more about Cronenberg and his genius from here than any other articles or interviews). It also contains plenty of citations and a solid bibliography for any students wishing to delve further into the ideas and genre as a whole, and reads fantastically smooth- the few instances of dry "aca-speak" are kept to a minimum, while the explanations and extrapolations of the information flow effortlessly between each other.
