About the Author
Back in 1961, I decided on a career in science rather than history after hearing President Kennedy announce that we were going to the Moon. I am fascinated by all aspects of science, and a specialist in optics, plasma physics and laser-produced plasmas. I have B.S. and M.S. degrees from MIT and a Ph.D. from Stanford in electrical engineering, have worked in various National Labs for many years, and later formed my own company, Photonic Associates, in Santa Fe. While I am actually a “rocket scientist,” having designed and built laser driven plasma engines for spacecraft, I firmly believe that you don’t have to complete Grade 24 to understand how things work. Ernest Rutherford said “if you can’t explain your physics to a barmaid, it’s probably not very good physics,” and I agree with that sentiment. I want to help you get over your fear of numbers and science. Read this book and see if I’ve been successful!.

I have been a student and and graduate-student teacher of mathematics and physics for many years. I consider this book to be uniquely valuable for both teachers and students from middle- school to graduate-school. It is wonderfully illustrated with pictures, sketches, drawings or diagrams on nearly every page that, together with its clarity of presentation by a skilled writer with a lovely sense of humor, make "No Wonder You Wonder!"
a delightful and educational read. Most importantly, I expect that if this book could be provided to the teachers and students of our schools, the barrier between students and the study of science and engineering would be significantly improved.

Glad someone is thinking about the smarter kids in class . . .

Kind of an amazing textbook for the brighter kids in the class. It is not recommended as a general read unless you have time to dip in to a chapter now and then. Claude has a teenager's sense of humor and this lively book would be a welcome addition to any AP science class. The author is an internationally renowned expert in laser ablation who just might have the answer to space junk cluttering the heavens -- but you do not have to know that to read and enjoy the book. Each chapter is a non-cumulative look at a different aspect of the broad subject we call Physics, including some history as well as contemporary theory. And there is just enough math you pique your interest, so don't worry about that.

Valuable, accurate, easily referenced information

I am a contractor and I find this to be a very valuable resource as a quick reference for framing residential construction projects. The illustrations are perfectly labeled and foolproof. The book is user-friendly in that it is divided into sections intuitively which makes finding pertinent information easy. This is a great book for anyone who may be building anything from stairs to a new roof, or for a homeowner who wants to do repairs, install a window, or check to see that their home has been properly flashed. Well written, well illustrated, highly recommended.

Very good compilation of articles.

This book is a must have for everyone planning to or currently designing vlsi high performance circuits. Covers initials/reviews of mos transistors from mid-to-deep physics to simple components and then to further more complicated circuits. Interesting to mention that the authors compile a set of related articles published on highly respected journals. Cons are that many times those coverage are superficial, condensed to one page and leads you to deeper research on the original references. Pros are that you have, in only one place, a whole compilation of good articles in the area. I think this is the most interesting aspect of the book, because once you study the concepts covered, you have good knowledge to understand those articles. Overall, the book outperforms many other books, both in coverage and in the level of detail on each topic.

excellent book for fundamentals/reference

I used the first edition of this book in my graduate class. I found the book well-written with good examples and explanations. It also covers a diverse range of subjects and I still find myself referring to it when I have doubts. If you are having problems with understanding fundamentals, I highly recommend this book as a reference.

Bad printing quality, many typos

The printing quality is terrible. A low quality publication for such a high price. It is like the foreign edition, no color. There are streaks of white across most of the pages, which make the text and pictures difficult to read. The book appears to have been eaten badly by the printing machine, because every page has the same crease pattern.

Seems to be a decent text on digital MOSFET circuits. My professor spoke highly of it. However, there are MANY typographical errors. Ridiculous.

This is an older publication and I think THE classic version of "5 Steps to Christian Growth."
The newer version has the same content, but a major makeover. While the new versions looks nicer, I like the older publication. But whatever version you get, you will greatly benefit from reading and studying this short but deep book.

In this remarkable biography of the elusive artist, Hayden Herrera observes this driving force of Noguchi's creativity as intimately tied to his deep appreciation of nature. As a boy in Japan, Noguchi would collect wild azaleas and blue mountain flowers for a little garden in front of his home. As Herrera writes, he also included a rock, "to give a feeling of weight and permanence." It was a sensual appreciation he never abandoned. When looking for stones in remote Japanese quarries for his zen-like Paris garden forty years later, he would spend hours actually listening to the stones, scrambling from one to another until he found one that "spoke to him." Constantly striving to "take the essence of nature and distill it," Noguchi moved from sculpture to furniture, and from playgrounds to sets for his friend the choreographer Martha Graham, and back again working in wood, iron, clay, steel, aluminum, and, of course, stone.

Noguchi traveled constantly, from New York to Paris to India to Japan, forever uprooting himself to reinvigorate what he called the "keen edge of originality." Wherever he went, his needy disposition and boyish charm drew women to him, yet he tended to push them away when things began to feel too settled. Only through his art-now seen as a powerful aesthetic link between the East and the West-did Noguchi ever seem to feel that he belonged.

Combining Noguchi's personal correspondence and interviews with those closest to him-from artists, patrons, assistants, and lovers-Herrera has created an authoritative biography of one of the twentieth century's most important sculptors. She locates Noguchi in his friendships with such artists as Buckminster Fuller and Arshile Gorky, and in his affairs with women including Frida Kahlo and Anna Matta Clark. With the attention to detail and scholarship that made her biography of Gorky a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, Herrera has written a rich meditation on art in a globalized milieu. Listening to Stone is a moving portrait of an artist compulsively driven to reinvent himself as he searched for his own "essence of sculpture."

"I Am Always Nowhere"

I’ve seen some of Noguchi’s work, and Hayden Herrera’s discussions of it are enlightening. Still, my fascination is with Noguchi the man. He was clearly not the easiest person to get along with, but his tremendous drive, his insecurities, his amorous quests and intense focus all make for a great story.

Imagine a boy of mixed parentage, born in the U.S., raised partly in Japan, who sets off alone at the age of thirteen on a ship bound from Yokohama to Seattle. From there, still alone, he makes his way across the U.S. by train to a boarding school in Indiana. Early on, from a story like this, we see much of Noguchi’s character: he was a traveler, he was unafraid, and he was forever torn between two cultures. Because of his mixed blood, he said, “I am always nowhere.” “When I’m in Japan, I think I should be I the United States, and when I’m there I want to be back in Japan.”

This same geographic impulse—“I simply can not stay in one place for a long time”—also seems to have played out with his romantic liaisons. Reading about his long list of lovers, I thought of the old line, “She who flies from me, I follow, and she who follows me, I fly from.” Or, as Noguchi himself put it: “I’m nice to women who are bad for me and bad to women who are good for me.”

He could be cantankerous, ungrateful and self-centered—as well as wonderfully buoyant and supportive. It all makes for a great read, in this biography of one of our country’s most notable sculptors.

A strong biography, albeit imperfect

Preparing to lead tours of Noguchi's works at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden this fall, I found this biography an extremely helpful resource. It is clean and clear, if a bit prosaic. Herrera leans heavily on Noguchi's own autobiography and seems to draw little from other sources, save a few still living individuals close to the artist, including Noguchi's last lover. The book is best when it maps narrative to image, and the inclusion of some wonderful hard-to-find photos is one of the book's strongest attributes. The book also is especially adept at detailing virtually every lover of import the artist had, including Frida Kahlo (about whom Herrera has also authored a biography), which makes for some saucy reading. The major struggle I faced was the implication that there was a seemingly precise turning point when Noguchi turned from starving and struggling artist to overnight success. This is not, in fact, an accurate portrayal of Noguchi's arc. I don't fault Herrera for failing to capture the trajectory or finding the inflection point, for, in fact, I don't believe there was one. But I'm not sure why she seems to have decided she needed this in the telling of the tale. Another peculiar aspect to the story, related to my primary misgiving, is that Herrera seems to paint Noguchi as a critical failure, even into the 1960s, when he was anything but. On the one hand, he was receiving, she points out, retrospectives and major commissions around the globe. Yet, she routinely depicts reviews of the artist's work that carried harsh judgments or worse. I suspect Herrera selects this approach to continually cast her subject as an underdog, but it creates the peculiar impression that Noguchi was not an accepted artist when he clearly was. These are, in the end, relatively small problems in a well-constructed, competently researched narrative. But they leave the reader wondering why Herrera didn't thread the needle just a tad more carefully -- in the service of what would have made this important book even more believable.

Kendall's "Richard III"

I have read every biography and reference source about Richard III, and Kendall's biography still stands as the best introduction to a study of this monarch and his times, and to the controversy which still, despite all the recent scholarship, surrounds him. Kendall is often criticised for his romanticised approach to his subject and for his slightly purple prose, but his book is intensely readable, clear, and scholarly. Later research ahs produced evidence which outdates some of Kendall's points, but his overview of the era and characters continues to be the best. If you're new to the period/subject, or want to get someone else interested, kendall's "Richard III" is the best starting point. I find it an invaluable research tool. Kendall's "The Yorkist Age" is also the best book I have ever found for an understanding of the era. Sources like the Richard III Society website will guide any interested reader to many other reputable sources, but Kendall stands out as the place to start. (And, unlike many writers who claim to be historians, Kendall uses historical sources, not prejudices and second-hand information.) Highly recommended.

The man and the statesman

This book is one of the few that succeeds in revising the historical profile of king Richard by giving him the place he deserves. For centuries Tudor historians, particularly More and Vergil (using all the heavy artillery of political propaganda on behalf of their masters the Tudor kings) had drawn a caricature of king Richard, making him a monster, the incarnation of evil, not to speak of Shakespeare's play, as brilliant as false. This book proves that king Richard was a wise ruler, an excellent warrior (he decisively contributes to the final Yorkist victory over the Lancastrians in the battles of Barnet and Tewksbury in 1471), loyal to his brother king Edward IV, tender to his wife, loved by the people (specially by Northerners, by the people of York, where he was almost adored, while Henry VII and Henry VIII, the first Tudor kings, were much hated, which explains the constant rebellions of Yorkshire under Tudor rule) The tragedy of king Richard III has nothing to do with Shakespearean plot; it is very unlikely that he ordered the death of Edward IV's sons (the book provides an interesting appendix on the matter) and, of course, he had no body deformity. His tragedy was both personal and political: a man who saw the death of his beloved wife, son and brothers, a king who tried to rule for the people against the barons and paid a terrible price, the price of being betrayed at Bosworth field in 1485; a ruler who tried to take control of the political turmoil, hopelessly, as he found himself trapped in the turmoil, overwhelmed and finally swept away. However, he set the foundations of modern Britain, creating a strong State by undermining the territorial rebellious powers of the old feudal peerage, which were the cancer that had consumed the nation since the Beauforts had made a puppet of Henry VI, the last Lancastrian king, and which degenerated into the open enmity between the dukes of Somerset and York and the subsequent civil strife. Apart from reading a fascinating period of the History of England, this book made me seriously think of how easy it is to falsify History. Richard III is somebody who definitely deserved rehabilitation. Well done, Paul!

Bloody brilliant...

It seems that you can find two camps comcerning Richard III - people who think that he was truly the deforemed monster portrayed by Shakespeare or those who think that he ought to be canonized. Paul Murray Kendall did an excellent job of rendering a portrait of King Richard III that does not revolve around the typical Tudor propoganda and at the same time doesn't clamour for sainthood to be bestowed upon him. Anyone who is looking for a relatively unbiased view of this misunderstood monarch should definitely look into this excellent source!

Reads more like a baby's board book

Ok, but not overly helpful for kids because it really only addresses the physical aspects of having two different homes. Very simplistic. Not something the kids are going to want to read over and over. Reads more like a baby's board book. Not sure its kids at that age need a book to help them adjust unless it was free.

Great Book for kids whose parents are divorcing.

I bought this book for my daughter who is 11 years old I am reading it before I give it to her and it seems Perfect for her!!!! I think it is clear and right to the point with all the feelings and emotions that have happened and that will transpire as things change. I feel it will help her along this tough process but assure her that things will be good again.
