Decision Points is the extraordinary memoir of America’s 43rd president. Shattering the conventions of political autobiography, George W. Bush offers a strikingly candid journey through the defining decisions of his life.

In gripping, never-before-heard detail, President Bush brings readers inside the Texas Governor’s Mansion on the night of the hotly contested 2000 election; aboard Air Force One on 9/11, in the hours after America’s most devastating attack since Pearl Harbor; at the head of the table in the Situation Room in the moments before launching the war in Iraq; and behind the Oval Office desk for his historic and controversial decisions on the financial crisis, Hurricane Katrina, Afghanistan, Iran, and other issues that have shaped the first decade of the 21st century.

President Bush writes honestly and directly about his flaws and mistakes, as well as his accomplishments reforming education, treating HIV/AIDS in Africa, and safeguarding the country amid chilling warnings of additional terrorist attacks. He also offers intimate new details on his decision to quit drinking, discovery of faith, and relationship with his family.

A groundbreaking new brand of memoir, Decision Points will captivate supporters, surprise critics, and change perspectives on one of the most consequential eras in American history – and the man at the center of events.

From Booklist
George W. Bush’s decisions were all correct. It was just the aftermath that sometimes became muddled. That, at least, is the impression one gets after reading this surprisingly robust memoir. For those who have missed “43” in the public eye (and for those who haven’t as well), his voice is evident on every page. Cocky, defiant, and, at times (especially when speaking about his family), emotional, this is the George Bush who insists that “everybody” believed there were weapons of mass destruction, that much of the blame for the post-Katrina fiasco should be put on Louisiana’s local governments, and that Harriet Miers would have made a fine Supreme Court justice, given the chance. He does admit some mistakes (“Mission Accomplished”), but he stands by his big decisions and backs up his claims, which is simpler to do when the other side isn’t chiming in with their opinions and/or facts. Those who have followed Bush and his presidency will find many of the personal stories here familiar (how he stopped drinking; his whirlwind romance with Laura), but there are some fascinating reveals as well, including his affection for Ted Kennedy, his sometimes-complicated relationship with Dick Cheney, and his read-between-the-lines digs at Colin Powell. Some political memoirs (hello, Bill Clinton) are bloated journeys that devolve into pages and pages of, “and then I met . . .” Bush, smartly dividing the book into themes rather than telling the story chronologically, offers readers a genuine (and highly readable) look at his thought processes as he made huge decisions that will affect the nation and the world for decades. Many will ridicule his thinking and bemoan those decisions, but being George Bush, he won’t really care. --Ilene Cooper

Review
"Decision Points is well-written, and interesting from start to finish. I think people of all political stripes should read it." Bill Clinton "Whether you love or loathe George W. Bush, this book is worth buying. It's well written, in a crisp narrative style. It is reflective and self-critical, informative about the decisions that he faced, and the process by which he achieved them...if understanding is the first step to redemption (for Bush), this book will help." The Times "Decision Points...gives the reader an uncanny sense of how personality and the fateful interplay of personalities within an administration can affect policies that affect the world." The New York Times "An immensely readable and fascinating account of the key decision moments of his presidency told through the prism of his life...will go a long way towards setting the record straight about those turbulent, transformative years of American history." The Daily Telegraph

MUST READ FOR ALL AMERICANS-LIBERALS AND CONSERVATIVES
By Tomas Aragon
On rare occasions do I change my perception of public figures who have had negative light cast upon them and a reputation tainted with catastrophic failures. Iraq, 9/11, and Katrina will always overshadow President Bush’s countless accomplishments and positive contributions to the world. In George W. Bush’s autobiography, Decision Points, the former president explains his side of the story in a charming, personable manner. At times you can sense his anger and frustration directed at his critics; this is especially true regarding Hurricane Katrina and the racial allegations that led to a slow federal response. By reading George W. Bush’s autobiography you will understand the circumstances surrounding his presidency and how he handled them with honor, integrity and in the best interests of the American people. If you harbored a negative perspective on George W. Bush, this book will surely change that viewpoint.
Decision Points flows through different themes of his extraordinary life, beginning with the decision to quit drinking and finding God. It’s written thematically, making the book a much more relatable read and easy to follow. Themes vary from the moments leading up to 9/11 to whether credible intelligence on potential WMDs warranted the invasion of Iraq. President Bush excels at drawing the reader in and connecting with the average American, wary of his reputation of being one of America’s most hated presidents. His likable charisma altered my stubborn liberal bias towards our 43rd president.
I would recommend this book if you wish to understand one of America’s darkest moments, where 9/11 and war plagued the nation. I would also recommend this book if you wish to get to know one of history’s most hated individuals, and how his behind-the-scenes work protected America from future terrorist attacks. An excellent read for both academic and leisure purposes.

A breathtaking, in-depth overview of the logic by George Bush in making his decisions on domestic and foreign policy
By Vahe Demirjian
Having experienced the ups and downs of the Bush II presidency, "Decision Points" explores the logic behind the tough decisions that George Bush made during his time in office, including the Global War on Terror, the Patriot Act, the Iraq War, No Child Left Behind Act, Hurricane Katrina, and tax cuts.

Looking at the first year of the Bush presidency pre-9/11, it is interesting that Bush's push for tax cuts and elementary education reform sat well with Democrats and Republicans alike, given that Democrats were in favor of social welfare. In stressing the need to update the education system for elementary kids, Bush burnished his reputation as a passionate conservative.

Talking about Bush's response to 9/11, the Patriot Act was a smart domestic move by Bush because the Global War on Terror raised the specter of homegrown Islamic extremism in the US, meaning that Bush would have to arrest and jail any Muslim American who might be sympathetic to al-Qaeda or any other terrorist group. I think that Bush made the right decision to go into Afghanistan when deciding on where the Global War on Terror should start because the Taliban sheltered al-Qaeda, and because Powell didn't take Rumsfeld's recommendation that the US start the war in Iraq. By instructing the Pentagon to attack Taliban targets in Afghanistan and the CIA to aid the Northern Alliance and conduct covert operations against al-Qaeda, Bush articulated a thoughtful division of labor between the CIA and Pentagon as to how the War on Terror should be executed.

When talking about criticism of his reasons for the Iraq War, I like how Bush regretted the intelligence failure on Iraq's WMDs, while balancing that regret with his knowledge of the fact that Saddam Hussein didn't deserve to be trusted because he gassed his people, invaded his neighbors, and tortured opposition figures (he would have offended Kurds and Shiites in Iraq if he had chosen to invite Saddam to a state dinner at the Oval Office).

Regarding Hurricane Katrina, I have a feeling that Bush's response to Hurricane Katrina would have looked good in principle, only because he had to fend off obstruction by an non-cooperative city mayor in New Orleans who was incapable of satisfying the pleas of blacks who were trapped because of the hurricane.

Great book for people who enjoy history
By Amazon Customer
President Bush gives an incredible account of his presidency and other key personal aspect of his life that shaped him to be the man that he is. It is well written and offers insight as to how and what he was thinking the crucial moments of his time as president. The chilling and tough story of 9/11/01 from his perspective and how he had to battle against partisan politics to make Americans feel safe again. Great book for people who enjoy history.

Honey-mustard chicken roasting in an oven, fashion models sporting the latest line of lipstick, blush and balm, and the piercing sound of paper being torn in half may not seem to have much in common. But in reality, food, cosmetic and paper products similar to these often undergo rigorous testing at some stage or another as part of a fascinating-and stimulating-scientific process: sensory evaluation.
Aimed at the practicing sensory professional, Sensory Evaluation Techniques, Third Edition, makes product evaluation clear, concise, and approachable, with the simplest to the most complex sensory methods and their interpretation spelled out. The book explores the theory and applications of sensory evaluation methods with sufficient background material to allow the user to understand the evaluation of sensory perception and actually perform sensory tests. The book's "how-to" description of sensory evaluation methods features all of the commonly-used practical sensory tests, followed by a guide to selecting the optimal method for a given problem. Descriptions are accompanied by several practical examples. Consumer research techniques are included, and the book contains complete instructions for the Spectrum method of descriptive analysis, as well as relevant selection of those statistical techniques the sensory analyst needs, with examples illustrating the analysis of sensory tests.

Also new: a Test Sensitivity Analyzer and over 300 scales and hundreds of standard terms for the Spectrum method. So whether it be for instructors and students of sensory science, practicing sensory analysts, or researchers and libraries in the production and marketing of food, beverages, cosmetics, fragrances, textiles and paper products, Sensory Evaluation Techniques, Third Edition, is one of the most comprehensive sources on sensory panel techniques in the industry.

Even though I have never taken a sensory course before, this book allows me a greater understanding of the information without bogging me down with complicated terms and lofty prose. The book also has great example throughout. And with the great price, who wouldn't buy it here? I told my classmates about it, and they are getting it here as well. Thanks!

I have collected a variety of Sensory materials (articles, manuals, books, etc.) through the years, and I hadn't found a book more complete and updated than this one. It has extremely useful tips for Sensory leaders, from building a Sensory Lab to Multivariate Statistical techniques you can apply. One of the best sensory text books
By D. Gardner
This is one of the best sensory text books I've used through college and into my career. The value of this text is that it explains industry based sensory evaluations and provides sensory sheets and data pages that can be used for sensory projects. It may be missing some information on sensory theory, but its value is in how it can be applied to a practical setting.

Piper Skye is rock ‘n’ roll. She’s party all night, sleep all day. She’s get wild and be free.

Or she would be if she had the time.

And the energy.

And not being so awkward would probably help, too.

As the owner of a thriving dessert business, Piper spends her days at school and her nights elbow deep in batter and frosting. She’s confident her hard work and sacrifice will pay off as long as she stays focused and sticks to the plan.

Jake Hyde is a workaholic with a jaded outlook on life. Surrounding himself with employees he considers his brothers, he long ago made the decision that his custom garage would be his focus.

Fate, as it often does, has other ideas. Plus, a killer sense of humor.

Thrown together by coincidence, the gruff mechanic and the sweet as sin baker have instant sparks. Suddenly, all of their carefully made plans have taken a giant freakin’ left turn.

And they do it on the back of a Harley.

*Warning: This book is intended for adults. It contains frequent adult language and situations.

Don’t try this at home.

At least not without stretching first.

Maybe keep the sneakers on for traction, too.

***This is book one in a series, but each book will be a STANDALONE with a new couple. NO cliffhanger.***

Fun read
By Angela
Overall, I loved this book. So why did Hyde and Seek work for me?

The first sentence, “Babe, that your van?” and the following pages had to be the funniest opening to a book I've read in a long time. The thoughts running through Piper’s head were hilarious and made her immensely likable right off the bat. There were some really funny lines throughout, including one in which Piper was thinking that her general vibe screamed introvert, “Actually, I don’t think you can scream introvert, but it definitely mumbled it.” Yeah, that was great. The line that made my side ache from laughing and forced me to read it to my hubby at one in the morning came from a stylist about to do Piper's hair, "Mr. Hyde had a request, but he said it’s up to you. I, on the other hand, am saying that the choice is not up to you, and we’re just doing what he said. ‘Cause, Sweetheart, your man might be fine with a capital ‘F$&@ Yeah’, but he is also scary as a broken condom on prom night.”

The story flowed very well. Frost did a good job introducing us to the Hyde world. The guys were likable, so that’s good going forward. It looks like this is the first in a potential series of books, which means Frost not only needed to tell Piper and Jake's story, but give us a few glimpses at other characters we'll (hopefully) be seeing more of in future books. She succeeded in doing this without making the main story seem choppy. Intrigue was brewing, but the writer didn't jump right into it. I love reading the "courting" portion of a romance and since this one was both funny and hot I was glad Frost gave time for that courtship before the extra story conflict was thrown at me. I was ready for the story to escalate when it did and was pleasantly surprised by how it all played out. I read a ton of books and I am almost never surprised to find out the identity of the antagonist when I am reading a book or watching a movie. I read this book really not altogether sure how things would play out. It was so much fun to read an ending I did NOT see coming. So kudos.

I'm also a sucker for the "Big Age Difference" trope. Not sure why, I just know it works for me. This story, though, played out a bit differently than other books I've read with a large age gap between the main characters, but not in a bad way. Yes, there are about 14 years difference in age between Piper and Jake, but because of Piper's maturity readers are not going to be reading a book about the older man needing to take care of a much younger woman. If this is what you look for in this trope then you will be disappointed. But if you enjoy seeing a somewhat grumpy, jaded, thirty-something guy get reminded how fun and colorful life can be, and get that reminder from a delightful, yet mature, 20 year old woman, this story is one for you.

So what didn't work for me? Well, it's not really something that didn't work, it was just something that meant I had to dip into the whole "suspension of disbelief" thing. I read for entertainment and I like whatever the heck I want to like, not what someone tells me I should like. And because of this I am very good at suspending disbelief when I am enjoying a good story, and Layla Frost's story is just that: good! But that's not to say I didn't have to work a bit to believe a 20 year old would have it together like Piper. A mortgage? A successful business? Having enough experience in her short life to make elaborate wedding cakes? I guess none of that is unheard of, just definitely not the norm. I enjoyed the hell out of the story, though, so I went with the "suspension of disbelief" thing because doing so meant I could get back to reading more about Piper doing s*** to make Jake let loose those sexy as sin growls. Yum!

The other thing that ordinarily doesn't work for me, but did here, is first person POV. I usually avoid books written in the first person, mainly because so few writers are good at letting readers get to know characters other than just the one narrating the story. If we only know what Piper knows, how do we get to understand Jake without reading some of the story from Jake’s point of view? That’s a tricky problem a writer faces when he or she decides to stick with first person narration. Being able to fully flesh out all characters with only the observations made by one character is a challenge few writers master. I'm trying to be better about giving first person POV books a chance, but I still rarely bother reading a book if I find the sample to be first person POV. Lucky for me, Frost had a kick-ass opening that drew me in enough to keep reading, because she wrote one fun book I would have otherwise passed on. And Frost rewarded me at the end with a bit of Jake's POV.

I was going to give Hide and Seek four stars mainly because I rarely give out five stars. But considering all the crappy books I've read recently, I decided this was not a good reason to not hand out a five star rating and reconsidered my qualifications for a five star book. So here are some reasons this book is better than four stars:
1. Good editing. I can not tell you how annoying it is to read a book with a ton of typos, poor grammar, and misspelled or misused words. This is a huge problem with self-edited books and will totally kill an otherwise good story for me.
2. "Hey, I did not see that coming!" I'm not surprised too often so it was refreshing to come to the climax and realize I was not even close to figuring out "who done it."
3. The re-read test. I was lucky to read an earlier version of Hyde and Seek several months ago but when it came time to read the finished product I was a bit worried it wouldn't keep my attention the second time around. No problems! Each page was just as much fun the second time around so readers will get their money's worth each time they read it.
3. Well developed characters. I got a good feel for all the characters, not just the main ones.
4. Nailed the first person narration. Can't tell you enough how much I hate first person narration but Frost won me over. The first line intrigued me enough for me to keep reading once I realized it was going to be first person. It helped that Piper was a likable character so she was not an annoying narrator.
5. Hot factor. Phew, Jake is one yummy alpha male. And I won't spoil it for you, but I could only hope to be called into his office.
6.. I got a HEA with no cliffhangers.
7. No cliffhanger, but it did leave me wanting more. More stories of those hot guys of Hyde! Get your fingers typing, Layla, because I want more.

I could knock off a star because I did have to work a bit at believing a 20 year old could be as together as Piper was, but in the end that really was not enough to knock off a star. Taking in all my reasons listed above, plus the fact that overall I just plain liked the story, I have to give Hyde and Seek five stars. A fun, sexy read.

An enjoyable read with some sexy and sweet
By S
This romance has some good things going for it. The curvy, sweet heroine and the alpha bad boy were a good match together. I liked that he was tatted, he even rocked a sexy man-bun, blond hair and green eyes, and I really liked that he was a mechanic. I thought some details about the h needed more attention, like her school life, but I did like her. She seemed mature at times (her own home, a business start-up, a car, etc.), but then she would act a little young to me. She's 20 and the hero's 34.

I also enjoyed how bossy, possessive and jealous the H was. He even does that caveman speak, grunting and growling "Mine." I thought this had a kind of KA feel to it, especially with how the H acted and talked. Most sentences ended with "yeah?" I think the whole caveman thing is sexy, but I wanted more from him. We don't get his POV until the last 15% of the story, and once I had that, I wished maybe I'd had it earlier.

He's sexy and alpha, but he's also sweet and very gone over this girl. A bad boy who wants good love, he's actually the first to confess love. He did put his foot in his mouth, though, more than once, and by the end of the book, I'm thinking, dude, get it together. At the end, when things start coming to a head with the relationship and with a baddie on the loose, I wanted them both to be smarter.

For me, the pacing felt a bit off. I'm reading and wondering why I'm not finished yet. Not that I wasn't enjoying it, but I felt like I needed more to happen at certain times and less at other times. The I-love-you's come at about 50% in, and I tend to not like that when there are a lot more pages left to go. So, then it was drama, with his ex, her wannabe boyfriend, and some crazy stalker at large, and other smaller things going on.

The sex was erotic and hot, and this couple felt sweet and good together. So, even with some quibbles, I did enjoy this and am glad I tried this new author. She has a nice feel about her writing, and I'd read her again. She set up some sexy, interesting secondary characters, namely Kase and Rhys. On a side note, the editing's fairly tight, and there's also a sweet epilogue.

New Author and Promising Series - ARC for honest review
By Lauren - Kindle Unlimited
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review, and I am super late putting the review online. It wasn't that I did not want to write it, I was having a hard time explaining my feelings. Funny as I was going to write my review I read a few others and one person said they equal parts liked it and hated it and that was close to my feelings. But I liked it more than hated so I am around a 3.5-4 rating.

Overall, I really liked the book and would recommend it to anyone. I really enjoyed the romantic suspense aspect of the book but to me that was introduced a little late in this book. The end was a surprise to me and I think that is what made the book so good to me. Most of the time I can figure it out, with this one, the ending was a surprise to me. Also, I felt that when the H/h had issues they worked it out like real people for most of the book, and I felt that lent a little more legitimacy to a relationship between them. Many reviewers have compared the author to Kristen Ashley and I cannot deny I am a huge fan so maybe that is what drew me to the book. I can also see the rest of the series developing from this book.
Now that I said all the stuff I liked about it, there were a few things I had issues with. One was the “meet cute” of the H/h, I felt it was abrupt and as soon as they meet she is all of a sudden best friends with all of his friends. Plus everyone wants her and is trying to steal her away from our H, but it’s like she was hatched at that moment. Had she never met any men before that?

Also, personally I am not a fan of the age difference of the H/h. I think that is mainly because she did not seem to be a typical 20 year old. In my opinion there was no need for the author to make her that young, but I can see why since there several plot points like her in being school that worked well with that age.

Highly recommended to professionals and students
By Esther Flury
The Handbook of CRM is a great book that I highly recommend to professionals and students anxious to learn more about Credit Risk Management. It is organized into 18 chapters describing the fundamental way to handle credit exposures in a large organization. One can learn about things to pay attention to when entering into new transactions, how to analyze credit risk, how to manage a portfolio and techniques to mitigate credit risk if and when necessary. The book follows a logical order which is easy to follow. It is not too technical and you do not need to have previous knowledge of the subject to understand the main messages. It is very practical and illustrated with many examples which help understand what the authors explain. I am glad I finally found a book about Credit Risk Management from which I could learn. A real success.

Darwin's Cathedral: Evolution, Religion, and the Nature of Society, by David Sloan Wilson

One of the great intellectual battles of modern times is between evolution and religion. Until now, they have been considered completely irreconcilable theories of origin and existence. David Sloan Wilson's Darwin's Cathedral takes the radical step of joining the two, in the process proposing an evolutionary theory of religion that shakes both evolutionary biology and social theory at their foundations.

The key, argues Wilson, is to think of society as an organism, an old idea that has received new life based on recent developments in evolutionary biology. If society is an organism, can we then think of morality and religion as biologically and culturally evolved adaptations that enable human groups to function as single units rather than mere collections of individuals? Wilson brings a variety of evidence to bear on this question, from both the biological and social sciences. From Calvinism in sixteenth-century Geneva to Balinese water temples, from hunter-gatherer societies to urban America, Wilson demonstrates how religions have enabled people to achieve by collective action what they never could do alone. He also includes a chapter considering forgiveness from an evolutionary perspective and concludes by discussing how all social organizations, including science, could benefit by incorporating elements of religion.

Religious believers often compare their communities to single organisms and even to insect colonies. Astoundingly, Wilson shows that they might be literally correct. Intended for any educated reader, Darwin's Cathedral will change forever the way we view the relations among evolution, religion, and human society.

Amazon.com Review
God or evolution? Though the debate about our origins has swirled in epic controversy since Darwin's time, David Sloan Wilson bravely blends these two contentious theories. This has been tried before, of course, mainly by religious intellectuals. What makes Darwin's Cathedral stand out is that Wilson does not pursue the classic "intelligent design" argument (evolution is God's hand at work), but instead argues that religion is evolution at work.

Wilson sees religion as a complex organism with "biological" functions. He argues that the social cohesiveness of religion makes it analogous to a beehive or a human body--and, in fact, religious believers sometimes employ these metaphors. He writes, "Thinking of a religious group as like an organism encourages us to look for adaptive complexity.... Mechanisms are required that are often awesome in their sophistication." To Wilson, therein lies the astonishing complexity of religion, just as in the biological world.

Following Wilson's argument requires understanding the rudiments of evolutionary biology; a smattering of theology, history, anthropology, sociology, and psychology is helpful, too. But the reasoning isn't as challenging as Wilson warns in the introduction. For educated readers, it's an accessible book.

In just 260 pages, Wilson can't begin to do justice to the broad swath of intellectual work he's cut out for himself. And ultimately, the book's main failing is its simplicity. In addition, his approach to religion is so clearly an outsider's that he is unlikely to win many converts. Adaptive-mechanistic explanations of forgiveness and altruism may be intriguing to the atheist in the ivory tower, but they are likely to elicit little more than a bemused and passing interest from believers. --Eric de Place

From Library Journal
Viewing religion from an evolutionary perspective, Wilson (biology and anthropology, Binghamton Univ.) argues that religious belief and other symbolic systems are closely connected to reality in that they are a powerful force in motivating adaptive behaviors. Disconnecting religion from its reliance on supernatural agents as a defining principle, he posits human religious groups as adaptive organisms wherein processes like group selection, evolutionary pressures, and moral systems come into play, offering a new avenue for interpretive insights. To his credit, Wilson looks for a middle ground in this complex confluence of biology, sociology, anthropology, and religion: "I think group selection can explain much about religion but by no means all." He depends heavily on Darwinian theory, sociologists like Rodney Stark, and symbolic thinkers like Emile Durkheim and Terrence Deacon. He ultimately argues for the power of symbolic thinking as a sophisticated adaptive advantage alongside factual thinking. Wilson's readers should be prepared for a tightly argued, highly academic yet satisfying read. Sandra Collins, Duquesne Univ. Lib., Pittsburgh

Review
"Darwin's Cathedral is a masterpiece of clear thinking and even clearer writing. It is such a joy to read an important original contribution to science such as Wilson makes here, that can be read and valued by both professional and general readers. Darwin's Cathedral will go down as one of the classic treatises on the study of religion, alongside those produced by William James, Emile Durkheim, and Sigmund Freud, only Wilson's thesis has the added advantage of being scientifically testable." - Michael Shermer, author of How We Believe, Editor-in-Chief of Skeptic magazine, columnist for Scientific American

Durkheim's Revenge (?)
By Todd I. Stark
It has become inescapable to see ourselves as having evolved for group living. In "Origins of Virtue," Matt Ridley described the overall situation admirably well, and concluded that selfish organisms can evolve mechanisms that exploit the advantages of living together in groups, so long as those mechanisms don't sacrifice too much for the individual. The great fountain of selfish gene imagery, Richard Dawkins, once wrote that Ridley's book could well serve as a followup to "The Selfish Gene" as applied to human beings. So there is little doubt that even a theory based on "selfish genes" can be seen as explaining behavior that takes advantage of living in groups.
David Sloane Wilson first acknowledges that traits which promote us to sacrifice ourselves "for the good of the group" are unlikely to spread in a population. He find great value in fields like evolutionary psychology for finding innate human psychological traits that promote individual reproduction and survival. However, he also takes a thought provoking look at important transitions in evolutionary history and finds that under certain special conditions, individuals become united and begin to function in a very real sense as a larger organism. Genes become united into chromosomes, cells become organisms, organisms become hives.
None of this is new so far of course. What is unique is the claim that some of these transitions cannot be explained without having some form of competition between groups whose traits are widely divergent. The basic problem is that behavior that allows one group to fare better than another must also allow the individuals to survive and reproduce within their own group. So self-sacrificing behavior that makes a group of berzerkers unbeatable in battle against other groups has a hard time taking root _within_ the group of berzerkers unless it also serves them there. Wilson claims that the bias against seeing selection occurrring at multiple levels, especially by the way genetic fitness calculations are averaged, prevents most biologists from seeing "group selection" when it does occur. He then proposes that the missing piece is human moral systems themselves, which provide mechanisms that lower the cost of behavior "for the group" in terms of individual fitness.
For example, social controls such as rewards and punishments are known to strongly foster cooperation even though cooperation is very fragile otherwise. We have tended to see this either in terms of individual self-determination or entirely in terms of social pressure. Wilson's view allows a middle ground, of innate traits which social controls can leverage powerfully to produce cooperation. Wilson's main point is that such traits probably require a multi-level selection theory to explain.
Wilson uses scholarly study of religion from a variety of fields to illustrate how human behavior shows evidence of forming groups as adaptive units in the evolutionary sense. This was an idea that was proposed by Darwin (thus "Darwin's Cathedral") and seen as fundamental by many social scientists, but was roundly rejected for the difficulties it brings into population models of evolution. In addition, the recent critiques often brought to bear on social science sometimes tend to see social science concepts such as those of Emile Durkheim as something needing to be slashed and burned rather than just seen in a new light. Wilson takes a new look at Durkheim's functionalist view of society and the various critiques of it, and finds plenty of archaic ideas, but also notes that the central theme of religion serving to unify human groups remains out of the ashes.
In Darwin's Cathedral, Wilson compares his view of religion as something that unifies human groups with the competing views of religion as a collection of arbitrary Gouldian "spandrels" or byproducts of evolution, the view that religion is a form of catchy imagination, and the Dawkinsian view that religious beliefs are mental parasites, and makes his case very well. He is very careful in his analysis and pulls from a wide range of scholarly material to make his case that, provided we are very careful about how we measure Darwinian fitness and very careful not to look for group selection where behavior can be explained otherwise, we can explain aspects of human behavior that simply can't be explained in terms of inclusive fitness for the genes of our relatives or even by playing games of reciprocal altruism.
Wilson makes many of the same points as Pascal Boyer does in "Religion Explained," but seems to tie things together more neatly with his theoretical framework. Since he is not limiting himself to psychological adaptations that solely promote individual survival and reproduction, Wilson has the added flexibility to pose adaptations for punishment and reward that serve social ends, which makes for much more elegant and powerful theory that explains a wider range of phenomena such as the tendency of human beings to see themselves readily as members of groups, their willingness to punish defectors, the the joy most of us get out of finding that we've helped someone else.
The only problem with this book is that Wilson takes on too much of a task here for one slim volume. The data on human religion is massive. I'm reminded of Frazer's classic "Golden Bough" and how virtually no one has ever actually read it all the way through in its single highly condensed volume, much less the dozen or so volumes he originally wrote. And yet he makes his point. Wilson also makes his point, and then draws from the massive data but seems to suffer in trying to navigate it all. He spends a lot of time looking at Calvinism from various angles for example. Everything he reviews seems to help him support his theory of religion as adaptive and unifying, but there is so much more to look at that in the end it feels oddly incomplete.
This is wonderful interdisciplinary theoretical work that deserves much more followup than a single person can possibly give it.

Visiting Darwins Cathedral
By A Customer
I found this to be an extraordinary book....Dr. Wilson combines impeccable science in his own field with a widespread interest and respect for scientific fields other than his own and has the unique ability to synthesise their offerings into his own understanding and ongoing inquiries. The author has an obvious and contagious relish for ideas, and unlike many authors has not attempted to write "gospel" but has hoped to start, and even explicitly invited dialoque. What makes Dr. Wilsons book additionally unique, is not only the depth and breadth of his ideas and research but his unique style of writting. Rarely is immaculate and lucid scientific discourse, great humor, and poetic expression found in one volume, as is the case here. The book from conception to execution is a thought provoking delight, whatever preconceptions regarding evolution or religion you bring to it's pages. You do not have to be a scientist to enjoy this book, only a person who enjoys the challanges of good ideas masterfully presented

An excellent compendium of three-minute "mini" puzzles
By Christopher Morgan
This excellent compendium offers 303 intriguing "mini" puzzles of great variety, including word puzzles, geometry puzzles, arithmetic puzzles, matchstick puzzles, three-D puzzles, paper puzzles, and coin puzzles -- to name just a few of the categories.

Each puzzle has a three-minute time limit, making the book great for dipping into. The degree of difficulty ranges from very easy to challenging. A major factor here is the three-minute time limit: it can quickly change a moderately difficult puzzle into a real challenge. The puzzles all have four multiple choice answers. This is very helpful in beating the time limit, since you only have to deal with four possible answers. I especially liked the three-dimensional puzzles. Many of the puzzles remind me of the kind you might see on an IQ test -- only these are much more fun!

Gestures and Acclamations in Ancient Rome (Ancient Society and History), by Professor Gregory S. Aldrete

Life in Rome was relentlessly public, and oratory was at its heart. Orations were dramatic spectacles in which the speaker deployed an arsenal of rhetorical tricks and strategies aimed at arousing the emotions of the audience, and spectators responded vigorously and vocally with massed chants of praise or condemnation. Unfortunately, many aspects of these performances have been lost. In the first in-depth study of oratorical gestures and crowd acclamations as methods of communication at public spectacles, Gregory Aldrete sets out to recreate these vital missing components and to recapture the original context of ancient spectacles as interactive, dramatic, and contentious public performances.

At the most basic level, this work is a study of communication -- how Roman speakers communicated with their audiences, and how audiences in turn were able to reply and convey their reactions to the speakers. Aldrete begins by investigating how orators employed an extraordinarily sophisticated system of hand and body gestures in order to enhance the persuasive power of their speeches. He then turns to the target of these orations -- the audience -- and examines how they responded through the mechanism of acclamations, that is, rhythmically shouted comments.

Aldrete finds much in these ancient spectacles that is relevant to modern questions of political propaganda, manipulation of public image, crowd behavior, and speechmaking. Readers with an interest in rhetoric, urban culture, or communications in any period will find the book informative, as will those working in art history, archaeology, history, and philology.

Vale Aldrete: A Gesticulatory Tour de Force
By A Customer
Aldrete's insight and clarity illuminate this subject far beyond the pale beam of traditional historical scholarship. The author writes so well, and has such a clear understanding and enjoyment of his subject that a potentially banal subject springs to life. The illustrations by Alicia Nowicki are crisp and also show a deep knowledge of the subject. This book is a true gesticulatory Tour de Force. I look forward to further books by the same author.
