If You like WMD .... Ooh, and Religion

Genius 'military' type, who's 500(?) yrs old, is a merc, gets job saving angels and .... Does he get it done? Can't say, would be a spoiler. But I can say is the story is about a very old, sad, repetitive occurrence of man, religion and war. With way too much religion for me.

Reading this frustrated me a bit as I look for mil SciFi and I get a story where someone watched a few movies or read some books for their military insights. The inconsistencies just pile up -- don't believe author knows difference between a fire tm, squad, platoon and I'll stop there. He threw in 'cool' weapons but in doing so created inconsistency. The method genius uses to counter a million to 1 disadvantage is ... Disheartening --- NBC. And this has a lot of religious overtones thru out. The good guys use WMD? Come on. And MC has robotic pillboxes and a host of other weapons, if intelligently applied to counter 'threat'. Nuke em!

I got confused to 'his universe' as author used planets, implying origin of characters but then characters had earth type accents and just switched around from Florida to Texas to Planet X, Y, Z.

Amazon special at $0.0 and can't recommend to spend money to go any further. The one question by the end -- are the angels really Angels.

Not My Cup Of Tea--but may appeal to others.

It is difficult to write a review of a book when you are clearly not the intended audience. Objectively, the author has skills and the offering is well edited. There is a strong Christian undercurrent to the plot that it is well done. The military aspects of the book lacked any punch, the characters were extremely one dimensional and if you are looking for standard military science fiction this is not your cup of tea. If you are looking for a G rated, over simplified, pro religion, Obama is the bad guy type of read (the 'evil' race is named Amabo) -- I recommend the read. I gave the book 4 stars for the solid editing and the author's skill at descriptive prose. I took one star away for the unrealistic dialog. I will not be purchasing any other offerings from this author--but I can certainly understand how this style might appeal to others.

A suspenseful read!

A very good novel with an intriguing plot. Rich and religious Belen Morganthal hires soldier of fortune Logan Ryvenbark to do the impossible: Defend a non-violent rustic race on a distant planet against about two million sub-human warriors who want to exterminate the peaceful race. The twist comes as Belen believes the Aristolans are perfect. They are a race that never fell and are sinless. Ryvenbark is less concerned about the Aristolans' state of grace than in keeping them alive. One piece of evidence for Belen's contention is an Aristolan friend who seems to be...well, perfect - a beautiful innocent. The plot details how Ryvenbark plans to save the Aristolans and if they are really a race that never fell. There are twists and turns and surprises -most of them nasty - for the commander and his squad. As expected, there is a fight to the death battle. The first chapter is superbly written and draws the reader in. Even if this is military science fiction, most of the characters in Ryvenbark's squad are distinctive and three dimensional characters. At the novel's end the reader is still wondering about the Aristolans, even though he is impressed by them. Think the last third of the book got slightly away from the authors, as happens some times in novels but, nonetheless, this is an intriguing, exciting novel. Another plus is the characters are often witty so there are any number of funny lines. If you enjoy action and science fiction you should definitely read this novel.

Gorgeous pastel dreamscape sure to be a classic

For me the selling point of this book was that it was bilingual in Japanese and English, and since I am raising my children in those two languages I thought it would be perfect.

Then I read rave reviews in the New York Times and Kirkus Reviews.

Turns out I liked even more than the reviewers at those publications did.

The premise of this book is that a quickly growing boy has developed a penchant for climbing, and climbs right up on to a fluffy and cheeky cloud. These two are fast friends and go on an adventure. The beautiful landscapes Sora spies while soaring through the sky are peppered with the toys of his bedroom and the bugs that capture the imaginations of preschool boys around the world. The graphics of the title promise Showa-era (post-war) illustrations, and Hoshino delivers, with a retro feel that will appeal to kids and parents alike.

There's a certain feel in classic Japanese picture books, and Hoshino manages to capture that in both the prose and illustrations. The Japanese translation of Akiko Hisa is also inspired, and both languages convey the whimsy of a young boy's dream.

If the detailed illustrations aren't enough to keep your interest the 100th time your child asks to read this book, play spot the squirrel! Hoshino has hidden an adorable squirrel on almost every page.

Hoshino is well on her way to being a master, and is able to convey all the best of the style of Japanese classic children's book author Hiroshi Kagakui to a brand new audience all over the world.

In a globalising world, where information and images are routinely transmitted across the globe, we are all regularly in contact with others who think differently, and live differently, from ourselves. Cosmopolitans welcome and embrace this cultural complexity. Fundamentalists find it disturbing and dangerous. Whether in the areas of religion, ethnic identity, or nationalism, they take refuge in a renewed and purified tradition--and, quite often, violence. Giddens is not coy about where he stands: "We can legitimately hope that a cosmopolitan outlook will win out." In what is sure to be a controversial chapter, he examines sex and family life through the prism of this fundamentalist-cosmopolitan divide. He is severely critical of what he calls the "traditional family," which he considers an aspect of fundamentalism the world over and an enemy of sexual equality: "I remember what my great aunt once said to me. She must have had one of the longest marriages of anyone, having been with her husband for over 60 years. She once confided that she had been deeply unhappy with him the whole of that time. Forget the global village, says celebrated London scholar Giddens in this brief, accessible look at the aftereffects of globalization; on the contrary, we've got "global pillage." Based on a series of lectures originally broadcast on the BBC, this book confronts the benefits and dangers of global processes and asserts that life in the coming century will amount to a precarious game of "risk management." Giddens, whose 1998 work The Third Way spurred debate over the course of social democracy, argues that globalization's most profound effects will be not economic but cultural. Drawing on the work of Eric Hobsbawm, Marshall McLuhan and others, Giddens offers thumbnail sketches of broad themes--family, risk, tradition, democracy--as they've been reworked by global political and economic forces. He praises the advent of a "global cosmopolitan society" but cautions that salutary gains, such as equality for women and the spread of democracy, are threatened by a fundamentalist backlash. China has considered making divorce more difficult, he writes, while rhetoric about the traditional family structure remains a pernicious force against change around the world. Many of Giddens's arguments will sound familiar, but certain assertions are bound to be controversial. Sexuality need not be dominated by heterosexuality, he says, at a time when marriage is an increasingly defunct institution. And tradition itself can be seen as a creation of modernity, invented to secure the interests of power. Giddens is a sociologist and the author of 31 books that have been published in 22 languages. He is also the director of the London School of Economics and cofounded Polity Press, a successful publishing house. These days he is most often referred to as British prime minister Tony Blair's "guru" (and he is also said to have the ear of President Clinton) for articulating "the third way" in his so-titled 1998 book. The "third way" is a political philosophy that treads a path between liberalism and conservatism, thereby incurring often harsh criticism from both liberals and conservatives. It espouses "traditional" values, social justice, and a market economy. This slim new book examines globalization, risk, tradition, family, and democracy from that same philosophical perspective. It is based on five addresses Giddens presented in 1999 for the prestigious Reith Lectures, an annual series aired by the British Broadcasting Corporation. David Rouse

The basics of a growing freedom

Freedom is wonderful.
That's the basic message of this book. Americans take freedom for granted, but much if not all of the world had less freedom than the US until the recent past. The first half-century of American independence was marked by chaos, out of which a unique and growing American freedom developed which could not be shattered even by the War Between the States.
Now, and I say this as a Canadian nationalist and not an American chauvinist, the rest of the world is catching up with the US. The result is worldwide chaos. The foundation of Canada has always been peace, order and good government; in recent years, this complacent assumption has been challenged by Quebec separatists and the rise of a new political party in the western provinces. Even at that, Canada is a mild case of chaos compared to what is happening in many countries.
Giddens looks at this chaos in relation to a number of universal concerns -- risk, tradition, the family and democracy itself. In each case, as more people are given the right and ability to make their own decisions, a difficult transition to expanded freedom takes place. Giddens examination of family values is an example of the controversy and confusion that is being generated.
For almost all of history, families were economic units based on the ability of one person to provide an income and another to look after the household and raise children. Now, with both people in a marriage able to earn a self-sufficient income, the basic nature of marriage is changing. It is no longer a case of economics, marriage now involves a democracy of emotions.
On a personal basis, Giddens cites the example of a great aunt who ". . . had one of the longest marriages of anyone. having been with her husband for over 60 years. She once confided that she had been deeply unhappy with him the whole of that time. In her day there was no escape." My own mother could have said the same. Today, there is an escape. Divorce is becoming ever more respectable; once, it would have been unthinkable to elect a divorced president, yet no one questioned Ronald Reagan's divorce and the fact that his next wife was several months pregnant by the time they married.
Now, add this freedom to all other elements of society. Then, expand it worldwide. The result of this phenomena is globalisation. Conservatives in foreign lands denounce it as Americanisation, but it is purely an expansion of personal freedom. When you get change, you get chaos. Out of that, as shown by the chaos prior to the writing of the US Constitution, a newer and freer society sometimes emerges. It's happening in Canada, in China, Cuba and worldwide.
Giddens examines the basics of this growing freedom. Once these basics are understood, the current chaos of globilisation can be seen as a dawn of expanding freedom rather than an insidious American plot to take over the world. On that basis, every country will develop its own freedom even if it doesn't match the appearance of American institutions.
Unless, of course, conservative forces of tradition seize power to end the chaos and restore peace, order and good government. Freedom can be as diverse as every distinct society; repression always wears the same stern face of not allowing people to make decisions for themselves.

I realize that this book was created for the masses, but it insults intelligence and makes some sweeping generalizations and essentially promotes a Western imperialist tradition. Giddens admits to some of the criticism of globalization but he glosses over the horrors of ecological risk and global inequalities and touts the joys of democracy as being spread by globalization which results in "pure love" relationships. Somewhat of a stretch of the imagination and too much to cover in 83 little pages with big print. No references make it useless for an interested reader.

Globalization in 100 pages

Sociologist Anthony Giddens has recently made some notable contributions to political discussion. This books is based on his radio lectures from 1999 which do not have much to do with Gidden's academic conributions. Instead, this is a practical book aimed at general public interested in the current world affairs. In just 100 pages, compact size and absent of academic buzzwords, the book makes an easy and fast read.
The book has five themes: globalization, risk, tradition, family and democracy. Giddens handles them in turn like he would be playing with his favourite football. Shifts feet, moves forward and kicks when the goal is sure. His playing is readable indeed.
One can rise a couple of leading themes from the book. One is the idea of cosmopolitan tolerance. The other one is the doublesided meaning of risk. On the one hand, risk is what globalization has brought to our daily lives and society at large. On the other hand, risk enables the speed of evolution we are now facing in this global village.
In some parts of the book, one can be very impressed how Giddens summarizes in about three paragraphs what others have written in a 300+ pages of treatise. This is the case of e.g. Soros on global capitalism, Bernstein on the meaning of risk and Castells on information society. Though there are no accurate references - there simply couldn't be - Giddens provides in the end a fifteen page list of selected readings with a short comment on each. I found it very helpful way to put my understanding in a more larger context.

About the Author
Robert J. Sternberg is Professor of Human Development and a member of the Graduate Field in Psychology at Cornell University. Formerly, he was IBM Professor of Psychology and Education in the Department of Psychology at Yale University, where he also was director of the Center for the Psychology of Abilities, Competencies, and Expertise. Dr. Sternberg received his B.A. from Yale and his Ph.D. in Psychology from Stanford University. He also holds 13 honorary doctorates. He has received numerous awards, including the James McKeen Cattell Award from the American Psychological Society; the Early Career and McCandless Awards from the APA; and the Outstanding Book, Research Review, Sylvia Scribner, and Palmer O. Johnson Awards from the AERA. Dr. Sternberg has served as President of the American Psychological Association and of the Eastern Psychological Association and is currently Immediate Past-President of the Federation of Associations of Brain and Behavioral Sciences. In addition, he is Editor of "Perspectives on Psychological Science" and has been editor of the "Psychological Bulletin" and of the "APA Review of Books: Contemporary Psychology." He is a member of the Society of Experimental Psychologists, the National Academy of Education, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, as well as a fellow of the Association for Psychological Science and the American Psychological Association.

Karin Sternberg is Research Associate in the Department of Human Development at Cornell University. Previously, she was a Research Associate at Harvard University. She has held an NIH grant to help elderly people better use their cognitive resources. Dr. Sternberg received her Ph.D. in psychology from Heidelberg University in Germany summa cum laude, and her bachelor's degree from Heidelberg as well. She has an MBA with a specialization in banking from the University of Cooperative Education in Karlsruhe, Germany.

Mr. Crippin has more than accomplished his goal. …The book is 'Field Ready', i.e., it is bound in such a manner (spiral binding) that allows it to be useful in the field as a working text and not a cumbersome reference book. The glossary itself serves as an easily followed self teaching guide about explosives and chemical weapons. …This book definitely will serve the purpose of aiding the First Responder to make better decisions in the field and save time and hopefully lives.

Nice try - but lacks depth

The very best parts of the book are the glossary and the appendices. The rest is a bunch of information put together in the most sloppy way I have ever seen. In the unlikely event that an editor actually did go through the book before publishing - he or she ought to be fired.

The text is, as far as I can see, a lot of print-outs from a spreadsheet, collected in overall categories and given a spiral back. Then sold at $150 !!!

The information is given in a list-format, with a keyword and the appropriate factors of relevance for a given section

For example: On page 8, section "chemical compounds", dynamite is listed, as an explosive, not a chemical warfare agent, and as a secondary explosive.

So far, so good - but the very same information is repeated in the next 13 lines in the very same table (?!?).

There are numerous examples of such duplicate information, which all in all becomes very tiresome.

The format is a good idea, sections with overall topics, "compounds" "pyrotechnics" and so on, and then a keyword based 'look it up' list of basic information.

So in the end two stars: One for the format, and one for the appendices.

I was one of the people lucky enough to have picked this up while it was still for sale in retail stores and online. It sold out in less than a week. The amount of stuff in this set is amazing and it's probably the most fun and useful Advent Calendar I've ever had. Some of the items aren't my color but the best part is that I wouldn't know for sure until trying them out. Things like the It's Potent cream I probably wouldn't have tried if it weren't for coming in a set like this. This set is hands down the best intro to all things Benefit Cosmetics. The box is HUGE and it makes a really, really impressive gift even if it isn't used as an Advent Calendar.

Great resource for reviewing Elements of Literature

This is a great product to review elements of literature, and to make sure the student grasped previously taught concepts. It is only 48 pages, of which 34 of them are worksheets along with succinct definitions and examples. So do not expect this to serve as your primary teaching source. However, it does a very good job with the 48 pages provided, and I was happy with the quality of the product. We home school and use a spiral teaching method, so it was useful for that application.

I was really disappointed with this product. It wasn't as helpful as I thought it was going to be. There were some nice resources in the back, examples of stories to use with different kinds of literary concepts like irony. Not worthwhile.
